Frozen corn causing issues?

Postby Eurycerus » Tue Aug 07, 2012 11:26 am

So I know that corn is parrot safe and good for parrots. I have been gently thawing corn from a bag (frozen and I'm pretty sure organic) and then I give her like half a tablespoon or so. She loves it! However her poo changes consistency and gets more runny. So I stopped to ensure it was really the corn and yes it is directly linked. Does anyone else have a parrot that's allergic to corn? Or is it because it's frozen not fresh? Seems kind of weird. Also the corn is not bad. We are sharing the bag so I have eaten from the same bag.

Also there are little hard corn chunks in the nutri-berries that I give her as a treat and in her Harrison's pellet mix and that doesn't affect her at all.

I believe it's just because the corn has a lot of water in it. The corn in the pellet mix is dried, so she's not consuming additional water when she eats it. Do you notice the same thing when you feed Nika fruit?

Scrubby's poos become watery if she eats fruits or veggies that are on the juicy side. I don't think it's abnormal.

Here's an article about poops! :D

PS: I don't know anything about the rest of the site, this was just where I learned about parrot poos.

Oh okay, that's good. I thought it was a shame that I couldn't feed her one of the few vegetables she's taken a shine to. :] Thanks for the article. It was helpful.

I've sort of avoided fruit because she's been hormonal and the high sugar I thought wouldn't help. She seems to be doing much better now so I can probably start to introduce some different fruits now.

I believe that feeding what is in season is the better way. That is the way they would eat in the wild. That is the way we would eat if we did not have refridgeration.

I give mine frozen corn and green beans. They seem to like it cold as well as warm.

What is funny is that my cockatiels like to eat the outside of a fresh green bean but the amazons break them open and eat the seeds.

Myrtle tried her first fresh fig today. Rambo still won't try.

Yeah I was giving her cut up figs and she would sort of nibble at the innards and then toss them to the floor. Little punk. :P She refused to try fresh or refrigerated steamed broccoli or cauliflower even after three weeks of trying by giving her a fresh serving each meal time. Didn't like snap peas either.

Currently she'll only eat corn, carrots, and sweet potato. I will give fruit another try since her hormones are a little more under control.

The funny thing is that I was cutting up fruit and veg for my cockatiels and amazons well lovie too.
Flying Myrtle decided to try them whole. First it was a bag of oranges she broke into. When I saw the hole she dug I just put the whole orange on their table. Same thing happened with the apples.

The funniest thing was that she is only aloud in part of the kitchen that leads to the dining room. If I leave it on the counter top it is fair game. She is not aloud near the sink or stove. One day I had to keep chasing her away from the stove. Then one time when I tried to chase her off she could not fly. She had her beak stuck in a mango and could not let go or fly with it. Yes - she got that mango too. The Amazons seem to like to dig into their own fruit and veg. I don't cut them up any more. The tiels and lovies I make a hole in the food so they can get started.

That is a pretty priceless mental image.
