Postby Holly35 » Mon Sep 24, 2012 3:40 pm

Hi I was wondering from those who have parakeets what name brand of food do you all by at the pet stores?. Is FortiDiet Pro Health parakeet good for parakeets to eat? or do you you all get another brand of food?. Any ideas would be really helpful I want to make sure that my new bird get's the best food.

The Harrisons brand is very popular on here, and I like it a lot. Not quite sure about the smaller sizes, but I'll be buying a bag soon. This is a staple diet, but a lot of people will recommend (myself included) supplementing with fresh foods and vitamin rich treats (sprouts, oils, powders...). Do your research! :)

Just please steer away from the seed-only / millet diet. ;)

I use Prestige for my cockatiel and they do one especially for parakeets. It's the same mix they feed the birds in Loro Parque in Tenerife and it's a seed and pellet mix. We also feed our cockatiel with 5cm of spray millet per day and also fresh fruit and veggies. Once per month he gets a treat stick.

I actually use them prestige mixes as well, but as the seed portion of their diet, Usually use it for foraging toys etc. Then I use harrissons for the pellets. couse the seed/pellet ratio in the prestige is borderline redicolouse to be honest its basically a seedmix with a few pellets in it (atleast the australian and amazon mix).

We can't seem to get pellets in the UK at all, which is how we ended up with Prestige... If anyone knows where I can get pellets for my cockatiel in the UK could you let me know please.

Sorry I got no answer to that really but most wellsorted petstores (that carries birds or birdaccessories) has a few pellets here, only one that I know that carry harrosons here tho, and funny enough their the ones (out of the stores keeping bigger birds) that has the least amount of birds, usually only a couple tiels couple budgies and 1 or 2 zons or something in big cages. Anyways besides this petstore the only other place I know of here where I can buy harrisons pellets over the counter is the avian vet. Btw wasnt it you that mentioned in another thread that your tiel was under weight? in that case I'd actually still might offer the seedmix (with the few pellets there are in it) as long as the tiel gets proper excersise, if it doesnt excersise alot foraging is one way to "force" some movement.

Hi Polarn

No my bird isn't under weight it was the person I was replying to whose bird was- ours is small because he is young (only 5 months) and vet said he's fine weight. Our bird is really active though and flies around all the time and has lots of play time so I was just thinking of getting him some pellets to supplement his diet as you suggested- especially as he's started his first molt they need more vitamins and stuff. I managed to find them online at a website called viovet- I got harrison's lifetime pellets.

Thanks for your help though, I might start supplementing him with some pellets as well as his seed mix and fruit and veggies.

Apologies to hijack the thread but it may help to answer some questions anyway :-)

Uk suppliers, I use northern parrots to get harrisons, I buy the bigger bag and then freeze what I wont use in a month and some seed or sprouting mix to avoid the delivery charges. I've always had a fast and reliable service from these guys and they have excellent customer service too.

Other places include midland parrots, scarletts parrot essentials, parrot care and I'm sure there are many others, I believe these businesses are smaller family run businesses so sometimes the service isn't quite as fast. Midland parrots definitely are good for personal customer service though, I always always call in there on the way back from Tropical bird land when I go. Really friendly people who offer tons of advice if you need it. The only thing I don't like about them is they wing clip like most other petshops :(
