Are pumpkins safe for birds?

Postby Tro » Mon Sep 24, 2012 10:38 pm

I know birds can eat pumpkin seeds but can they eat the reast of the pumpkin?
I bought pumpkins today for carving jack o lanterns for my porch. And I want to have my bird out while I'm doing it because he loves new activities, but obviously he will get into it for fun. Is it ok if he ends up swallowing some of it? Or would it be best to leave him in the cage for this.

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

That is the CUTEST photo!!! <3

Yes, parrots can have pumpkins -- it's on my "healthy parrot diet" list! :D

Apparently parrots can have pumpkin seeds, too, as it's in Tiki's pellet mix.

Tiki and I have eaten pumpkin pie together. I bake a lot, and I make sure I don't put any nutmeg in it because parrots can't have it. So yes to pumpkin, NO to nutmeg.

Pumpkins also contain mannitol, which is a natural deworming agent. Not sure if that's A problem for birds, but it can't hurt!
