As for educating myself I am as and when I have time. For now my birds are on the best diet I can give them according to the research I have done but as I've told others there is always room for improvement but I dont want to mess up the nutritional ratios by trying to formulate my own at this moment in time.

Check and see if you can get Goldenfeast in your area; goldenfeastfoods.com

I'd really try and push some pet shops if this is where you're going and try to get them to bring this in, this is some really amazing stuff...

It's not that complicated to learn what a bird needs and eats, for starters all you have to do is look at the ingredients of lots of good companies and products out there and in time you'll figure it out...

Grains, seeds, beans, fruits, vegatables and various herbs are pretty much what most birds eat, of course there are the bug insect meat eating birds, but most pet birds are not these...

Be sure to give them plenty of fruits and veggies...

I'm sure you have a nice health food store in your area, just go in shop around a look and learn what are good things like what I mentioned above and if you like it and it's a healthy vegan product your birds will most likely enjoy it and it will be good for them...

Seriously even the nutritionalists dont know, even human nutrition which has been studied far far far longer than parrots the guidelines are changing from month to month.

I know what to feed but I do not know what quantities of what they require and what food has exactly what in it and in what quantity. I am studying nutrition as part of my course and believe me its a lot more complicated than putting in the odd carrot for a bit of vitamin A and a bit of brocolli for Iron etc. Get the balance wrong and you end up with a sick animal, too much of certain things is as bad as too little, on top of that most species have different requirements.
As I said, for now I do not know enough to play with that kind of fire and for now the diet they are on is the best I can do, with the knowledge I have and the time I have available to me..

Hi Marie,

Is there anyway for me to get access to the course you are taking? My parrots prefer fresh veggies and fruit over pellets. After reading your post, I worry that I may not be providing them the right amount of vitamins they need. Of course I know that macaws and greys have different requirements, I just don't know how to get it right for each one.

P.S. Mine will not eat the Harrisons pellets or treats and prefer the fruity Zupreem over the natural (which I am not a fan of them eating too much of the fruity pellets).

Hi Karma, I'm doing an animal management course in the UK which includes a unit on nutrition (various animals) and another unit which includes alot of dietry stuff called feeding and accommodation where we had to design feeding plans for 3 animals that they assigned to us.
This alone, and its fairly basic stuff but more complicated than throwing a bowl of manufactured food in a bowl, tells me I do not yet have enough knowledge to throw together a balanced diet for my birds out of solely fresh foods.
