Heat and heatstroke

Postby Eurycerus » Tue Oct 02, 2012 5:48 pm

So I pondered this a while back but never had any cause for concern until today.

Where I live (coastal northern and central california) gets one week, generally, of sweltering weather 95 to 110 F (35 to 43.3 C). Our buildings are not designed for heat so you just tough it out. It usually ends up killing all the blossoms on my orchids but other than that you survive. However, I'm wondering what sort of temperatures are deadly for a parrot? I imagine something more like 115 (46.1 C) and up in direct sun but I don't know. I thought that maybe I could freeze a bottle of water and put it at the bottom of the cage. Had I known today was going to be so hot I would've tried it out. I asked my roommate and she said Nika was okay.

Thoughts? Experience with heat and parrots?

Keep them wet and in shade with available water and they can last in whatever temperature you can.

Most parrot species are from extremely hot climates. As long as they have water and shade so that they won't dehydrate, they should be fine. I live in South Florida and my amazon and my WBC spend a lot of time on my screened in pool enclosure and they aren't bothered by the heat at all. Extreme cold is much more dangerous to parrots than extreme heat is.
