Heat!!!

Postby Cockatielsongs » Thu Oct 04, 2012 2:50 am

It's getting rather hot here in Australia and I'm worried about my cockatiel getting a heat stroke, When I'm at school my mum is home to keep my :greycockatiel: cool, but then she leaves for work and I will be home in 30min (40min the latest) so what we plan to do is place my :greycockatiel: outside (because it's hotter in my house than outside without the airconditioner) under a shade with cold water. Then I will be home to keep him cool. Is this arrangement okay?

Unless you have a secured aviary then I wouldn't advise it. Far too easy for a predator to knock over a cage, terrify the bird or worse.
'tiels are from hot climates anyway so s/he will be fine, just put a shallow dish of water in the cage so s/he can take a bath to cool down if s/he wants.

well seeing cockatielsongs is from australia I'm guessing he/she might know where they come from since their native birds to most of australia :) anyways since I assume you know this the question is really how much does the inside/outside temp differ, birds arn't generally that sensitive to neither heat or cold as long as their aclimated to it. I even know tiels who goes into their outside aviary every now and then even when its snow in em, so they go out for a while and then climbs back in... as long as your tiel got fresh water and shade it should be alright I think (as long as it isnt boiling inside as in you have a black roof, poor ventilation (opening a few windows with screens to even the outside and inside temp abit might help if thats a possibility) .

I prolly wouldnt have noticed if it wern't in the post to be honest :)

Oh btw I dont know if your in an apartment or your own house (well assuming your parents house in that case) but you could actually fit bathroom fans in the room where the cockatiel is (a lot cheaper than running the AC 24/7) to suck in air from outside, couse I would easily assume that the outside temp in the shade is definitly safe and considering they doesnt go extinct when the outside temp peaks. one way to avoid having to cut holes in the wall is to make a wooden box you can place infront of the window and then have the window open, and then place fans etc in that wooden box, this would assume you live in such a way leaving a window open would be safe, while it can be made safe for the birds it migth be harder to make it safe from burglers.

EDIT: normally a bathroom fan sucks the air out so make sure it is one that you can either flip the fan or change rotation (or mount on the outside). we have this sollution into the room where we keep the saddles etcetera, where we use the heat from the workshop and circulates it through this room by having one fan in one end of the room sucking air from the workshop into the saddleroom, and another in the other end of the room sucking air from the saddleroom into the workshop. this allows us to have a constant flow of air in the saddleroom couse otherwise it gets kind of a weird smell from all the leather etcetera, and to have the temp pretty much identical to the temp in the workshop.... (long edit I know)
