Can't tolerate my bird's sickness :-(

Postby Snoopy_the cockatiel » Thu Oct 18, 2012 1:04 pm

Halo Friends,

My cockatiel is sick for the last 2 days.It started raining here and it affected his health. He is not eating and always sleeping.Today due to some bacterial infection, diarrhea also has started.I took him to the general veteran(no avian vets here).I keep on crying for the last 2 days.I am unable to see his current situation.Somehow I managed to give him the antibiotic but he is not taking his food.when he shake his body, his sickness pushes his body back.He don't have much strength to bear that too.
I am so much worried. Not even 2 months has been over after he came to our home.He is much attached to me.He looks really bad now.I am hopeless.I can't concentrate on anything until he becomes well :-(

Force sugar water. If you can find the protien water that would be good too. Keep him hydrated to the point that his poop is loose. Give him the antibiotics just in case it is a bug. It could also be a blocked bowel and the water will flush it. Sugar water will give him a little energy and make him feel better. Keep him warm and cuddle. Touch is also a healer. You could also get some baby bird formular to keep him going until the antibiotics kick in.

I am sorry your baby is sick. It's a b.tch and I know you feel his pain.

@marie83 - I am from Chennai,India.
Doctor has advised to give a vitamin supplement a drop a day, electral for retaining water and strength to his body.My problem is its getting difficult to feed him the medicine and water. His beak is very small, can't hold him for few seconds,he resists the syringe by his tongue. So its getting spilled near his eyes.I am trying my level best but am not sure how much he is taking in.Today only,he started taking some millet.I am spending my whole day with him and keeping him in my arms most of the time.Hope he gets well soon.

I found these some time ago for someone else so I just copied and pasted the info across so some of what I wrote may not apply to you.

Ok I've had a look for you. I do not know if any of these are any good, what their qualifications are etc, how far from you there are or even if they are even in india but this is what I have pulled off from the web from a very quick search. Some of the posts may be old, have new phone numbers etc but I'm sure you can pull up relevent information by making more specific searchs.

Really hope this helps as your parrot needs help urgently before it gets worse.

Hi Marie83,

Thanks a lot for spending your valuable time for gathering more information to help my birdy. But I have to tell you this - unluckily the links and places you sent are from Mumbai & Delhi which is located in North India.I am from South India. But the mail IDs will help me.I have sent a mail to yuvraj.kaginkar@gmail.com expecting a positive reply.
And my Snoopy is feeling little better now.He started taking millet and playing like usual. But his poop is still loose and he is tired. Thanks once again marie83. I will update my baby's health status regularly here.I am planning to hang a bulb near his cage to keep him warm in this climate.

Thats a pain, if you really cannot find anyone then ask your vet if he would be willing to get in touch with a proper avian vet who can advise him on what tests to run, methods and help out with result analysis and any treatments that may be necessary. I've known of a few people who have done that and the birds have done alot better with the avian vet advising and the normal vet doing the work.

I'm glad you bird is starting to pick up a bit, fingers crossed that those improvements will continue. Just keep a close eye out on things even after he seems well again for any little signs, it sounds like it may just have been an infection but I had a few issues of 2 of mine where things kept reoccuring, we never did find out the cause for sure but they both got better after I decided to switch from tap water to bottled water.

Thanks for all the replies,friends..Snoopy is fine now anyway I am keeping an extra eye on him to avoid any further infection. He is playful, active, eating as usual and playing on the jewellery am wearing.I am adding a drop of vitamin supplement in his water bowl as doc says it can be vitamin deficiency.
Still I have a small query.Drops of medicine got spilled over his face while feeding. When he preens his feathers, medicine's odour spreading all over his body.Feathers in his face looks very sticky. So I can see only eyes in his face. That smell keep me reminding of the time when he is sick. How can I remove this stickiness and smell? I can't give him a bath as he just recovered from sickness. And no sign of Sun here. Can I add some mild soap in water and give him a bath..? I am not sure whether its safe for him.Any suggestions...?

Hi,

Are you sure it's the medicine and he's not vomited?- although if he is eating and behaving normally this is unlikely.

I wouldn't use soap as when they preen they could swallow this and it could make him ill again- even mild soap. You could use aloe vera straight from the plant as there are several products in bird stores that contain this and it's a natural product so it's ok. They sell it in our avian vets mixed with water. Cockatiels are the most hardy and resilient to temperatures as in Australia where they originate the night can get very cold. I wouldn't worry about him getting to cold because he's wet, in the wild they get rained on all the time. If you are concerned you can always wipe him down with a towel after.

The best thing to do is get some mineral water and a misting/spray bottle like you use for plants. Warm the water a little if you want to keep him from getting to cold and gently mist him from a height. Don't spray it directly in his face. If this doesn't work after a couple of days you can try holding him and wiping it gently with a damp towel. We can do this with our tiel' as he is hand reared and sometimes gets a sticky under beak when he eats apples! The best way to hold them is with the head gently cradled between your first a middle finger and hold him close to your chest so he has somewhere to put his feet. Most tiels panic when being held because they can't put their feet down.

I hope that helps.
