Broken bone or sprain or pulled muscle...

Postby Eileen » Fri Nov 23, 2012 10:19 pm

Hello Everyone,
I have not been on for some time but I am in need of advice please. We have two birds, when my husband went to the cage of our little Buggie on Thanksgiving he noticed something was wrong with her as she was not on the perch or climbing around in her cage. She is eating and drinking well but is not putting any weight on her left leg. We do not have have a regular vet to take her to at the present time and was hoping that with all the experience people here I could get some suggestions on how we can tell if she has broken a bone or maybe just pulled something? She does walk around a bit for short periods of time to go to her food and water, so we are hoping she has not broken anything but may have pulled something???? I am online now researching for a good bird vet in hopes of getting her in to be seen or maybe we might just call the S.P.C.A. and see if they can help guide us to a place to take her for some x-rays or something.

THANK YOU in advance for any information you can share.
Eileen

Not alot we can do to advise you I'm afraid, just get her to a vet asap. May I ask why you have waited until now to find a vet? Not judging, I didn't have an avian vet for a long time.
Whereabouts do you live? someone on here might be able to tell you some vets.

If you are questioning whether your bird has a "broken bone or sprain or pulled muscle" then this is a worrying situation... and a case of taking your bird to the vet ASAP.

If you'd like, you can PM me your area and I will put my epic library skills to use and help you find an avian vet.

Hello Everyone,
Just and update....My little buggie is okay! We watched closely on Thanksgiving Day and it seemed like we were going to have a very sad day. We emptied her cage down to the bare minimum to be sure she did not have anything in her way. She sat on the bottom of the cage which we lined with some cloth and took out the gird. We didn't even leave a perch. We tried and tried and could not get to a vet so searched the internet for help. Found a online vet site that gave good information on how to check if her leg was broken and did the things it suggested. She didn't break anything as far as we could tell. As the next few days passed with a heavy heart, we watched and tended to her and kept her comfortable as we felt she could be. Within a few days she started to put some weight on her leg and by Sunday was doing much better. By Monday she was acting more and more like her usual self trying to climb about so we gave her one perch positioned on the lowest bars.
To make a long story short, today she is in a new cage with more room and natural different size perches. She is doing well and we are still actively looking for a vet that has emergency hours and we can get too quickly. We have found two that we will be going to visit with to see how they relate to her and get her a check.
Marie~ Thank you for your reply, we live in a big city and have a vet but he is not a bird specialist but for our dogs and cats. He is good in basic care but we would like to find someone who specializes in birds.
Greenwing~Thank you for your help. I may just found one or even two that might be good as they are somewhat close to us. We will be visiting with one in a week and the other soon after.
