Regurgitating or vomiting?

Postby paper_lantern » Sat Dec 08, 2012 3:49 pm

Chubby has been hormonal lately, trying to mate with both me and his toys. Today I bought him a new toy, he sort of investigated it and then started gagging and pumping his head, some food came up whole...fruit I had given him (mango). He flung some of it but swallowed some back too. He did this twice and hasn't done it before or since. What is the difference between a hormonal parrot regurgitating and a sick parrot vomiting?

When should I worry? He seems normal in terms of drinking, eating, and activity/vocal level.

Myrtle is not hormonal but does regurgitate to try to feed me. I tell her no and she will swallow it back. She fed my thumb once while I was tickling her.

Mommas feed babys - mommas love babies. One of my lovebirds was always weaker than the other. Both were male but the stronger one fed the weaker one. The vet had no idea why the weaker one was failing to thrive. Toward the end Tweedle Dee fed Tweetle Dumb every day. He loved his friend and morned his death for three days.

It "sounds" hormonal as it is happening with other hormonal behaviors, but if you are really worried I'd take him into a vet. Tiki is pre-hormonal... how are you managing your lusty bird? ^^

Liz, do you recommend discouraging this behaviour? My Rosella is 21 years old and does this several times a day. He (or she, never got him sexed) used to do it against a bell he had in his cage, but now does it on my thumb when i bring him out of his cage.
