HOW TO GROW BEAN SPROUTS (IN 4 DAYS)

Postby Maria » Wed Dec 19, 2012 11:13 am

Easily, in your kitchen, in a jar! Video link below also on how to do it! This is great for our babies!! And you can use lots of different kinds of beans! Pinto, etc. I'm definately going to try this.

QUESTIONS: Lentils are safe for parrots to eat, right???

1. LID WITH SCREEN FROM HEALTH FOOD STORE. PRESERVING JAR. POUR ABOUT ½ CUP INTO JAR. SCREW ON LID. COVER THE LENTILS WITH PLENTY OF WATER. THEY DRINK SO MUCH, THEY NEED AT LEAST 4 TIMES THE AMOUNT OF LENTILS YOU HAD IN WATER. LEAVE THEM OVERNIGHT TO SOAK.

2. NEXT DAY POUR THE WATER OUT. LEAVE JAR UPSIDE DOWN ON A PLATE LINED WITH PAPER TOWELS, SO THE BEANS DRAIN COMPLETELY.

3. KEEP JAR BY KITCHEN SINK. RINSE THE BEANS ONCE A DAY. IN 3 OR FOUR DAYS YOU’LL BE ABLE TO EAT THEM. WAIT UNTIL THE SPROUT IS ABOUT AS LONG AS THE BEAN.

That's neat Priceboy!

Corn sprouts? Do you do it the same way? And what do you use? - Just like the kernals they use to make popcorn? (the natural ones with nothing on them)

I just planted a lot of corn plants and they got bigger in abut 3 months and I would pull off the corns after growing half way so it's like a handheld corn treat

yes lentils are safe!! you can sprout just about any bean or seed for your birds, except for enzyme-inhibiting beans (like kidney beans, soy beans...) that can't be eaten raw.

jars work fine, but I find sprouters are sooooo much better and easier to use, and make no mess! :)
this is the one I have:

As for the lenght of the sprouts, keep in mind that for human consumption the sprouts need to be longer to be easier to digest, but for birds they can be 1-2 days old instead (the lenght of the sprout equals the lenght of the seed) and they are more nutritious that way! :)
