Jenday Conure plucked out feathers

Postby anettstewart » Tue Jan 01, 2013 6:19 pm

My 5 year old Jenday female Conure has plucked out most of her feathers from being neglected by a previous owner. She is paired with a male Jenday, and the people I have adopted her from said he was an accomplice to the feather plucking. He isn't doing it any more and her feathers are starting to grow back. I have been using "Prime" vitamins on their fruit and veggies. Is there anything else I can do? :sun: :sun:

I wouldn't bother with the vitamins at all unless the vet has suggested it for whatever reason or they are really fussy and have a poor diet.
I think the best thing you can do is to just keep them nice and busy and hope that helps unless you think there is an underlying medical issue, which I doubt if the male is doing it.

I wouldn't suggest using vitamins if she is on a pellets diet. Vitamin overdose can be dangerous.
Instead you can look into feeding her more vitamin A -rich veggies, orange and dark green, as well as sprouts. My pluckers respond very well to sprouts!!!

Did a vet diagnose her plucking already?

Also do you bathe her regularly? Pluckers have a tendency of getting dry itchy skin which makes things worse, so a frequent spray bath with water only, even as often as once a day, can help. Also you can bring her in the bathroom with you when you shower, the steam helps relieve the itchyness.

If it IS indeed the male who plucked her, consider splitting them up in 2 cages or in a cage with a divider in the middle! Plucking often comes and goes with hormonal periods as well.....

Sprouted seeds/beans or brussel sprouts. I think they meant the seeds/beans though :)

Try putting one or two Tbsps. of human-grade Aloe Vera in the spray water. That's helpful for dry skin on a bird. Shake the spray bottle thoroughly before spraying the bird(s), so that they'll get the affects of the aloe vera. Hope I've been of some help here. Good luck.
