seizure / fits and frightened please help! :(

Postby NathanD » Wed Feb 06, 2013 9:50 am

My Indian ring neck X Alexanderine has been having really bad fits like he will flip upside down onto his head
Twice a night he falls from his cage and I run out and see if his alright
And he is stiff as a board and breathing really bad I can feel his heart, his on medication another vet is trying doesn't seem to be working he has had a blood test and they tested everything nothing wrong with him at all they dont understand the fitting??

Also he won't come anywhere near us anymore it takes a lot of effort, if he gets on the ground he will do his best to get away.
His wings are clipped.

Please help as we love him :(

His name is Zahzu.

Is the vet you are seeing an avian vet? Sometimes normal vets (as well qualified as you they are) don't know that much about birds and don't do the correct tests. A vet is better than no vet at all but sometimes getting a second opinion or a specialised vet.

I don't have much in the way of advice but bird medicine isn't as advanced as other medicines, however it is clear from what you have said that the medication either isn't working, the dose is wrong or perhaps your bird hasn't been on it for long enough to help but that isn't something any of us can probably advise you on on here.

I would suggest you keep going back to your vet (is s/he an avian vet? this is important)whilst there is a problem until such a time he tells you there isn't anything more that can be done if this is necessary (hope not for your sake).
Sometimes it is worth getting a second or even 3rd opinion. Our vets can't know everything sadly, its also worth doing as much independant research as you can in order to make suggestions to your vet.

Btw, I dont know if you are already but lower the perches and cushion the cage bottom with towels to reduce the chance of him hurting himself.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. keep us updated.

You might want to try to keep him in an aquarium (large enough to accommodate him) to put him into at night (unless he experiences this episodes throughout the day too) that way he will not be able to fall. Using soft bedding and low water dishes would probably also be best. For a perch, use small stand alone perches (if you can find one). It is a good idea to try to limit any height that he could fall from. Even a small fall can cause damage.
If you do use this method, make sure that it has a secure lid on it (using a wire/screen cover is MUCH safer than the typical aquarium hoods.
Best of luck. Keep us updated

Is there any particular time these seizures / or fits happen? What about circumstances when they happen? I have a 40ish yr old macaw that has seizures about once or twice a month. Medically I was offered to put him on phenobarbital to try to control them but I chose to just try to get him as healthy and strong as possible and review the situation again. He was in very poor health when he came here and the episodes were very alarming. Now the seizures are not as intense but just as frequent. There many things that have to be ruled out medically even being vitamin defficiant can cause these as well as heart and liver conditions. It is very costly to diagnose this problem. Good luck BW

Patti, the seizure thread is from 2013. I don't know why the recent poster used this thread but he wants info on visual sexing, not seizures.

They might start getting the ring at 12 months BUT, usually, you need to wait until they are two years old.
