UPDATE on Baylee

Postby Baylee4ever » Sat Feb 09, 2013 8:53 pm

Well she is doing great while i went on vacations i leaved her with my mom's friend and my mom's friend love her now lol she have 2 golden retrievers and THEY WERE SCARED of BAYLEE XD lol My little girl would run around on the floor and the dogs were petrifyied and stayed 2 meters away from her LOL. She bit the nose of the male dog when he was sniffing her lol after that the male dog didnt even wanted to be near her xD I only thought THAT'S MY LITTLE GIRL show him WHO'S THE BOSS xD lol When i came back she was angry with me for leaving her but she got over it in 2 days. Oh and she actually now flies 1 meter distance, I was playing with her the other day she was on my leg and she FLEW around it and then popped up from the back of my leg to the front lol (i was standing) that was short trip of 35 cm but still is a lot considering she didnt knew how to fly when i left her in my mom's friend house. Her wings are clipped so she can only fly low and short distances.

glad to hear that Baylee's doing so well!

Just wanted to caution you, however, that its not at all safe to allow large dogs to come so close to a small bird, esp when the bird can provoke the dog with bites like Baylee is doing. You are extremely lucky that your friends dogs didnt retaliate at Baylee by whacking her with a paw or snapping at her with their teeth. PLEASE better ensure the safety of your bird when you leave her in the care of others in the future!!!

You mention that Baylee's starting to fly short distances, but that you had her previously clipped. For Baylee's overall health and well being as a bird thats recovering from a medical condition, it would be best to leave her flighted, and begin a flighted lifestyle. please use the guidance provided in Michael's blog to teach and train Baylee toward a flighted lifestyle. it will be better for her health.

all the best with your :swaying:

I'm so so glad that baylees health problems got sorted out :)
I absoloutely agree with friend2parrots that it is much better on all sides for you to be overcautious around the dog, even if it is known to be a non-reacting softie, it only takes once.

I'm also really pleased you came back to update, so many dont.

Well the dog is a big plush lol he even shares his food & water with a rabbit that is about 2 months old, even tho the rabbit have his own food bowl and water bowls he think he is one moré dog. The female dog she saw Baylee and it was like Baylee wasn't even there at all, my mom's friend says "If a burglar comes in the house the dogs will play with him¡."Plus it was that house or one where she was going to be treated as a Wild bird and not as a pet bird. My mom's friend treated her like a queen which is how i treat her.

About the flighted part i will keep her clipped as i dont Live in USA and there is no system here to get her back If she gets lost, and there are people that could steal her. As she likes people too much. Plus she is a lovebird and i have never heard of lovebirds doing flight recall. Those are things for big parrots in my opinión.

I have to respectfully disagree with this statement. People don't allow their parrots wings to grow out here in the USA because we feel that there's a safety net to return our parrots. If my parrot escapes I won't give up on my parrot but I would not assume I am getting her back, in fact I assume I won't. I use every preventative measure I know to make sure she doesn't accidentally escape. Your reasoning is flawed, but if you choose to keep your parrots wings clipped that is your prerogative. I have to say it is really amazing to watch your feathered friend fly though. :)

Unless i find an harness that fits her she stays clipped her size should be XXS lol its very hard to find that size unless i buy an XS and adjust it to her. I lost Baylee's companion he was flighted and even tho i told everyone in my building and spread the word around some told me "dont worry he will be happier cause he is free now, " i found him days later dead by a Cat(he was only 12 weeks old, i hand raised him since he was 1 week old) :( and since People in my country thinks birds have to be free, Well Baylee will stay clipped i'm saddly sourounded of ignorant Ppl in my country, they even. Think a parrot can survive with only milk and bread :( i sometimes wants to pull my hair with the things i hear ppl do here their parrots like a green cheek conure eating meat with Chili Sauce and drinking beer and pasta with cheese everyday! :o :? I'm tired of explain to Ppl here in my country what the right diet for their parrots and they just dont get it.

i just wanted to mention that the view that clipping a birds' wings is necessary for safety is a myth, as many people all around the world have successfully kept flighted parrots safely for centuries.

clipping vs. flighted is discussed here at length by forum members :

viewtopic.php?f=16&t=96

also, I think you will find Michael's article linked below extremely informative in describing the reasons why clipping is bad for ALL parrots (lovebirds included) :

http://trainedparrot.com/Clipping/

in the end, it is your decision, of course, I just wanted to let you know about the information thats out there about clipping and flight.

all the best :)

To be honest, this sounds a little bit silly to me. There's a great video somewhere of a whole troupe of budgies doing tricks as a team, and yet for some reason you think your slightly larger bird is incapable of learning?

Here's a video for you to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XotVQPMhor0

So now that you HAVE heard/seen a lovebird doing flight recall, I don't think you have that excuse any longer. ;)
