Update on Percy!

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Thu Feb 14, 2013 5:51 am

OK so the actual avian vet rung this morning... A new avian vet (who specialises in parakeets and cockatiels!) not the nasty one last night!

He was so nice to us and spent a while on the phone to us. He also made us a special appointment tonight to come down and see him. He asked loads of things about Percy and he said Percy probably just has gas or a slight cold but it is always best to check and not to feel silly or paranoid because its better than not noticing anything.

So he has an appointment at 6pm tonight but I feel so embarassed because Percy seems to be so lively this morning. He's really turned a corner for some reason, he took his first bath... all be it in his water bowl instead of his actual bath (doh). He is eating and eating and.... eating and has drinking well. He has also become quite a bit more active as in showing more grass parakeet behaviours. He is beak grinding A LOT too.

There are still some bubbles in his poops but not all of them and they are a normal colour and consistency. He is sneezing quite a lot but the vet says there are many reasons for sneezing and as he is a baby and in a new environment its probably just that rather than having a cold. He is still doing some sort of tail bobbing but its not in sync with his breathing, the vet said because he is a long tail parakeet and not like a budgie his movements are exaggerated in his tail feathers. The only thing i'm slightly worried about is this noise he makes when beak grinding that sounds like a little cough it's only on occassion and I know birds can't cough but we;ll get that checked out tonight. Also he has sleepy moments... he'll puff up and kind of start closing his eyes and beak grind then 2-3 minutes later he's back eating or looking at something totally fine.

Anyway, he's getting checked out at 6pm. I'll update you all later.

Does the feathers on his head stay puffed? Thats another sign but could be that the room is too cold for him too.
A quiet parrot its a busy parrot.

That's great! I think it's pretty normal for parrots to nap accompanied by poofiness and beak grinding.

No his head doesn't puff up. Although red rumps are different to normal fluffing. They fluff their chest a lot naturally, this a their behaviour and they also puff up their tummies when they sleep. His head feathers are compact and flush.

Also the room is at the recommended temperature. As I said he only fluffs when he napping its not really a symptom. The avian vet said there are a million reasons why he would sneeze frequently; dust, molting, allergies, change in air pressure, change in air temperature, etc etc.

Hi everyone,

Percy is fine! The vet loved him and took samples of his droppings and put them under the microscope. There was no infection, worms or parasites. He checked his feathers and his wart and lungs. He said there was nothing to suggest Percy was sick and the bubbles are just gas. He should settle down in a few days. he also gave us his personal number and said to keep him updated.

The vet was extremely impressed by our samples taking of his poop and notes we had written. He said 98% sure Percy is totally fine. He is on two day cage rest just to be sure :-)

Incredible vet! As I said an expert in tiels and parakeets. He charged us only £21.00 for an hour long consultation with tests! He was so in love with Percy and said to bring Edmund down and he will gladly look him over.

Holy smokes, that sounds like the deal of the century. I believe a normal check up with blood test in the states is $200 to $400 dollars...

I know! I think it's because they are part of the hospital and can do the tests then and there. No costs for them to send away. They also offer insurance for birds which is good if you have multiple birds! Such a great place. The avian vet really seems to care so all in all Percy is fine! So relieved!

Seriously? I can see why people can't afford to go to the vets then (although I dont think those people should have pets). My last appointment was consultation, faecel tests and metacam and that came to £21 something. We've had blood tests and I can't remember exactly what they cost but was no more than £35 as apart from my very first appointment (I think x-ray and day boarding pushed the price up) no bill I've had has ever gone beyond £30-35.
