Seriously? I can see why people can't afford to go to the vets then (although I dont think those people should have pets). My last appointment was consultation, faecel tests and metacam and that came to £21 something. We've had blood tests and I can't remember exactly what they cost but was no more than £35 as apart from my very first appointment (I think x-ray and day boarding pushed the price up) no bill I've had has ever gone beyond £30-35.

Eric&Rebecca wrote:Hi everyone,

Percy is fine! The vet loved him and took samples of his droppings and put them under the microscope. There was no infection, worms or parasites. He checked his feathers and his wart and lungs. He said there was nothing to suggest Percy was sick and the bubbles are just gas. He should settle down in a few days. he also gave us his personal number and said to keep him updated.

The vet was extremely impressed by our samples taking of his poop and notes we had written. He said 98% sure Percy is totally fine. He is on two day cage rest just to be sure :-)

Incredible vet! As I said an expert in tiels and parakeets. He charged us only £21.00 for an hour long consultation with tests! He was so in love with Percy and said to bring Edmund down and he will gladly look him over.

How is Percy now, its been a few days since his visit so I am hoping he is settling better now.
Seriously, Ive paid around 400$ for a few tests as well when I did their last check up (blood test for psittacosis, feces tests, check up and nail trimming). Vet care is extremely expensive, but of course its something I will pay when needed (both parrots are also health insured). 35 quid sounds ridiculously cheap, but I am glad for your sake that you can get away with so small bills.

I would pay whatever needed to be paid, I have plenty of savings for them but if they run out I will find the money somehow. I'm just glad mine are not that every time given how many times we have been over the past year and 4 months because I really would freak out if my savings were depleting that fast!

He had been moving around the cage more, eating even more and he is preening and taking a bath occasionally. We've also been hearing some little chirps and beak grinding. His poops are bubbly a little bit but we are just leaving him for another week before we attempt any training. Maybe we were moving a bit fast before. We ringing the vet back Monday but he said as there's no infection or parasites he's not really worried. He said birds can have bubbly poops, it's not always an infection or something bad and as his poops are normal colour and fully formed it is highly unlikely he is sick especially given the quantities he eats.

He recommended no training or out of cage time for a few days to help this but he is definitely moving more and we will start leaving the cage door open and then the week after we will try putting a treat in our hand and holding it just inside the cage, when he's learnt that and will exit the cage on his own we will be able to start target training but that's a few weeks perhaps a month or two in the future yet.

Yeah we've had all those tests you described for around £40. I'm not sure why it's so expensive in the US... We will probably get both ours insured next time that way its another measure we can take to make sure we can afford it if anything terrible went wrong.

I was thinking of insurance too but it was something I was in no rush to do as I had savings for an emergancy. I left it a little too late and now there isn't a hope in hell of insuring my two, at least until they are diagnosed and cured, but even then I would worry that a company would just turn round and say it was related to this pre-existing conditions if we ever needed to claim in the future, they are crafty like that :( It would depend on the terms now if I will reconsider it in the future.

You can try Dr Stensen. Maybe he can help.

We take insurance out with the clinic themselves so it's safer like that. They less likely to try and weedle out of paying for stuff. If not there's the credit cards and the savings account.

is it weird that I have loads of savings thats saved for the animals, I dont touch them at all and even try not to dip into them when it is necessary if I can help it, but completely skint myself.... lol. Even I think I'm weird :? As it stands at the moment I would have no trouble getting credit (loan) and already have a credit card, I dont worry too much on the financial side of things.

glad to hear that Percy's checkup went well, and that he's doing well! :)

this sounds like a great plan. keep us posted on his progress.

also, i meant to tell you before - I read somewhere that the Red Rumped Parakeets youngsters molt as they grow up into their very bright adult plumage, which is really startlingly beautiful. i found this gorgeous picture on the web of an adult male:

and here's a picture of an adult male bathing : (its the one on the right )

This is happening to Percy at the moment! He's got light mlting which is why he keeps sneezing. His face is green at the moment but you can see the blue coming on the wings and tail!

He's eating like there's no tomorrow and the moment! I sit next to the cage eating my dinner with him.

Also those are both males... only the males have the red rumps.. the females are just plain olive green. I think also the one on the left is a juvenile male and the one on the right an adult male. :-)
