new cage

Postby roy » Sat Mar 02, 2013 9:33 am

I've just brought a montana denver corner cage for Biggles. My old cage the previous owner had removed the bottom grid because once he had messed on it and dried it was very hard to remove. The new cage has got the grid is there anything I can put on it so it's easier to get off

Personally I'm not a fan of the grills, I would much rather change paper 3 times a day than scrub the grills once a day, imo theres little point in the grills because I find that most of the droppings end up stuck to it rather than falling through. When Ollie first got sick we had the grills on and he was just spending time picking off the poop from the grills so I took them out and changed paper more instead which got me into a rather lengthy debate with a vet who called me irrresponsible lol.

oops, missed out the part about the cleaning. I used to scrub it in the shower with a brush on a daily basis. Yours may be too big for that though.

I spray it with some F10 (vet disinfectant) and it comes off fairly easily. I use an old toothbrush if it's stubborn. It seems to me that a fair bit of the poop goes through judging by the paper I remove every day. We all have our preferences don't we :lol:

Toothbrush is just cleaning tool. Spray with f10 disinfectant and then rub off stubborn poops :-)

You can use papers to judge the number and consistency of poops, when the papers are full you change, this can be up to three times per day (1 tiel is changed between 1-2 times per day). It also allows you to monitor changes in consistency. Essentially when the paper is dirty you change. Other cages liners can make it difficult to see such as the cardboard chips and things.

@Roy

I love Montana cages. We have one for Edmund, the San Remo playtop mini! Great cages and the avilon coating makes it really easy to get poops off.

I have never used F10 but I've heard enough people on this forum talk about it that I think I'm going to order some.

There is a product called Poop-Off that dissolves droppings from any surface (almost like magic!) and makes them really easy to remove. It's non-toxic and bird-safe so you can use it anywhere but I don't use it when my birds are in the room (although it contains no chemicals or perfumes).

F10 is very very good. It does the same as poop off, I get mine from Nothern parrot here in the UK in a premixed spray bottle. I spray it on, leave it 5 minutes and most of it washes off grate, perches, everything :-) Even took the green salad stains off the feeding platform, I'd been trying to get that off every day for a week!

It works out much much cheaper if you buy the concentrate stuff. We bought a larger bottle at last years think parrots and its still going strong despite me going crazy disinfecting everything lately. It stores really well without losing efficiency too but once diluted it only lasts about a year.
