getting some sun

Postby shadows3 » Sat Mar 02, 2013 11:13 am

Hello, on a nice day I have been putting my parrots cage outside in my front yard for her to get some sun. I have been leaving her in her cage outside to get sun for about 1 hour. When I bring her in it seems like she would have liked to stay out longer. Can you tell me how long is it good for her to be outdoors. Thank you, Anita

Far as i can see the more time outside they get the better, but they need access to shade/shelter at all times. beware of any preditory animals trying to get in the cage, knocking it over or even just stressing your bird out though.

In the summer I take Bucket's cage outside as soon as it warms up (between 11-noon) and he stays out all day until dusk. I just picked up a huge macaw cage (older but in great shape) for pretty cheap so I'm putting that outside this summer so I can just take him out in a carrier and put him in the big cage during the day. Guess what I'm saying is birds live outside. The longer they can be out the better IMO. I am careful to never put seed of any kind in his outside cage so we don't attract wild birds. Don't need him picking up any nasties from the locals.

My last bird, a cockatiel, was outside most of the day in good weather. I live in the Southern U.S. so I had to be careful of heat, but with plenty of shade and things to do, Weebo loved to be outside for as long as I'd let him. He seemed very happy watching everything going on around him and being closer to other birds. I'm wary of leaving birds outside unattended for very long, though. You never know what can happen. I had a friend whose cockatiel was stung to death by a wasp on her deck. :(

I live in Florida, so we have great weather most of the time. Elvis loves his outside time. There is NOTHING he luves more except for walnuts... ;) ..he stands on his play gym on the terrace watching the clouds, the trees and two doves that perch on one of the trees. Toos are pretty resilient in hot or cold weather, but I'm always on top of that. I have a full view of him in my living room to the terrace where he hangs out. The fresh air is THE BEST thing ever for him.

Is the terrance enclosed? I would be terrified of losing my bird if not. Too many people with clipped birds or bird that "dont fly" getting lost.

oh you are SOOOO right. I only take off his harness when I take a pic of him which is about 2 minutes or so. Otherwise he wears his aviator harness. Trust me, I would literally die, if any harm came to him due to my neglect. True, even clipped birds even if they never learned how to fly can be taken away with a gust of wind... :(
