Outdoor cage

Postby Strawfrawg » Mon Mar 04, 2013 11:05 am

Until I can get an aviary built, I will have my new Sennie doing his outside time in a regular cage. His indoor house is too big to lug outdoors, so I'm buying a second setup for this.

What is the smallest size cage you would recommend for a Sennie for outdoor time? I figure the world around him will be his main focus so it can be smaller than one he would actually live in, but I want to make sure he has enough room while also making it easy to manage.

I take my Poi outside in a cage whose interior dimensions are 18" x 14-1/4" x 15-1/4". It's the Poquito Avian Hotel. It's small enough to carry around pretty easily (although it is heavy if you have to carry it for a long period of time) but it's large enough that he has some room to move around and could stretch out his wings if he wanted to do so.

I wouldn't do this at all (unless you are using a travel cage that you are physically transporting with you, but based on the predatory situation you have, I wouldn't put the bird out in a cage at all) if the plan is to leave the bird outside unless it's an aviary. People who have left parrots outside in cages lost them to cats and other predators. Heck this happens to aviaries too but much less likely. If you are putting the parrot out on an enclosed porch or something like that where it is completely safe, then any cage will do really. Even a cockatiel/budgie cage is ok if attended or a baseline senegal cage or travel cage if not but the room is secure.

I guess I made the (perhaps incorrect) assumption that Strawfrawg meant the time outside would be supervised. When I bring my birds outside in their travel cages it's only when I or my husband can be there with them.

it is small, I agree, but its easy to carry by a girl (me!)
and for a stay outside 1-3 hours its fine with a forraging toy ;) to keep the birdy busy
