Washing bed sheets used as cage covers

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Tue Mar 19, 2013 2:21 pm

I use black bed sheets as cage covers, what could I wash them in? Would delicate/baby washing liquid be ok? My other washing tabs and softener are highly scented?

We use a non-scented non-allergenic kind washing powder. But really, I think other stuff can work as well!

Yup, I do all my laundry with non-scented non-allergenic washing liquid. I have an apt. & must be EXTRA careful with any fumes...even when I clean all appliances and bathroom with baking soda, a tad of dawn and white vinegar....I air out the apt.

I also use a laundry detergent that has no dyes and no perfumes. Not sure what you have over in the U.K. but I use All Free Clear.

Gosh, being aware of what I wash the cage cover in hadn't even occurred to me. I'm using a duvet cover my bf gave me for the purpose & knowing him (he's an 'air freshener' obsessive) it's prob loaded with softeners & fragrance. Thanks for bringing that up Eric&Rebecca!

I just boil wash Ollies in plain water, the heat kills any nasties and the action of the washing machine removes the dirt. If its seriously dirty which its only been bad once i'll add half the reccomended dose of degergant.

I've got silk/delicate non bio detergent liquid, I have a boil wash though so I might just use that or some washing up liquid and then do an extra rinse.

We too live in an apartment so we are very careful with pans (all stainless steel!) and we have an airvac systems above the oven anyway and always have the doors open. Unfortunately the kitchen is open plan and in the middle of the apartment so it's impossible to avoid 100% cooking fumes. We never cook at high heat though and with the airvac and windows fully open there's never a problem and there's no non stick pans.

We use F10 or BirdSafe disinfectant on all surfaces except for the bathroom and that has an air vac system and the door is permenantly closed, although we do open the windows even then!

Is clothes washing a problem, we use non-bio but they are scented, I didn't really think of that as an issue as they don't dry in the same room as the birds.

just wanted to add to what others have said that after washing any bird-related laundry its a good idea to dry it in the hottest drying cycle, until the items are SUPER dry, just to avoid any dampness during use or storage

OK I will definitely do that.

What about my normal washing? Is it harmful to use scented products on my own laundry? I always use non bio for my skin which is sensitive but I do have scented softner.

I would never use this on bird laundry but I'm worried about the laundry emitting scents that are abd for my birds.

I haven't used scented softner in a long time. But I do remember it would heavly scent the whole house. There is a great website DIYnatural.com that gives you tips on natural EVERTHING>>> I haven't had the time to sit and read all the options, but am sure it includes an all natural scented softner. If I come accros it, I'll let you know. :)
