Putting out of the cage?

Postby Raihan Taher » Wed Apr 03, 2013 2:35 pm

I see pictures where the parrots are kept out from the cage. How do they do that? Few days before i bought two parrots. Shall i open the cage door, so that they can come out. But how will i put them in the cage again? I am afraid to chase them.. Will they enter by their own?

In one article, i read that everyday the parrots should be kept outside from the cage for some time, but i am afraid doing this because i am not sure how to put them back again. What should i do?

Thank You

mine come out at 7am and go back in at 7pm. what helps is keeping a regular schedule, only feeding inside cage, make the cage a happy safe place to go. mine don't have any toys in their cage only perches, beds, and dishes only because the cages in my house are for sleeping and eating but putting fun stuff like foraging toys, and preening toys to keep them entertained will help. have you not handled them at all?

I would wait until they have settled in better and you have begun basic training. Chasing/grabbing them to get them back in wont help them learn to trust you if they don't go back in by themselves.
When you do get them out allow plenty of time to get them back in, don't do it an hour before you leave for work for example although you will be able to do that once you have trained them.

Read this article:

I wouldnt start with out of cage time until you have a good, positive way of getting the parrot back again. My suggestion is that you use target training for this, as it can be taught inside the cage.
When you got that down, and are able to take your parrot in and out of its cage, start with step up training!

I have kept CHILI and PEPPER in the same cage. Should i keep them in separate cage away from each other to make them tame?

But they love each other..

I would not separate them, because if they are bonded, this may cause them a lot of stress.

It may, or may not, take a little more work to tame two parrots who are living together, but its definitely doable! Start by trying to target train them, one by one, in the cage. When you are able to take them out, proceed to do so, one at the time to begin with, and train them separately. That way you will build up your own bond with respective bird :).

When they have out of cage time, they can be out playing together, but for training, have one out at a time, at least to begin with!
