HELP Please! Amazon Parrot Cage

Should I buy this cage?
http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA ... randes-_JM

Looking to get a new one for my boyfriend's family's bird. Amazon parrot about 4 or 5 years old. He currently lives in a very small cage. Thankfully he gets some time out, but I hate to think of him uncomfortable especially on days when he has to stay inside. He can't spread out his wings in the current cage. Additionally there was a flood the other day and the poor bird just barely survived... covered in water up to his head which he raised to the top of the cage to breathe during the storm.

From what I've read larger and with smaller bar spacing would be ideal... but as this is not even my bird I can't afford 4x the price for a slightly better cage. So sorry for the urgency I'm afraid someone else is going to buy the cage and I can't find any others even near the price. Is it worth it to buy him this (wayy bigger than the current cage and raised enough off the ground that he wont be hurt if there is another flood) or is there too much of a danger to him due to the bar spacing. My fear is buying him this so that he's more comfortable and then ending up killing the family bird when he gets his head stuck! The bars are 5cm x 5 cm, but it does say it was designed for Amazon Parrots.

Thank you so much for any input, I don't know much about birds but hate seeing him cooped up in the tiny cage.

Thanks for the reply!! I have tried craigslist but there are no cages as the site isn't popular here (we live in South America). The link posted is basically from an equivalent site and has some other cages... but most even smaller. Anything even close to that size I can find is either rusty or seriously about 4 times the price.

I'm not exactly sure where the cage was in the room, probably on the floor. Their bedridden elderly neighbor almost died too as the water was about up to her face when someone got in to rescue her... and several others weren't so lucky. It was bad enough pets just weren't a priority. Hopefully wont happen again but better to take precautions as the building he is in has only one floor.

Anything specific about the cage that makes you say that? I guess I can just keep looking to see if another comes up for sale and encouraging them to let him out :/

the bar spacing is too large like you thought he could get his head through and get stuck or injured. when my grandmother was given my :amazon: my uncle built him a cage out of welded metal like the kind used for garden fencing to keep out rabbits. it's pretty simple to make and cheaper than buying a cage. it won't last forever by the time i inherited him after my grandmother passed that had to be replaced but it lasted 20+ years so that could be another way to go until you or the family can afford somthing better. you can make it to whatever size you need.

Thanks, that's a good idea. I had been leery of trying to build one after reading a few posts on metal toxicity and them being able to bite through thin bars/some welds... but it sounds like that may be the best option. It's heartening to hear it worked for your bird! I'll do some more research and see what might be possible to make.

Any tips or how-to's appreciated as I have zero experience with welding.. or birds ; )

you don't have to weld anything that's just the name of the material. there were pieces of metal you can bend onto the fencing to attach the peices of fencing to make a square.

Wouldn't want to spend alot of money for a bird that's not even mine. Go to a few big car boot sales, I brought a big cage for £10 from one of them cuz the owner didn't want to go to the trouble of taking such a big cage back home.

Seriously, alot of people knock the idea of secondhand stuff but when you consider a £100 cage was found at a car boot sale for £10, it's worth it.
