How many perches do you keep in your bird cage?

Postby hlasdf » Sun May 19, 2013 1:24 am

And how do you keep poop from getting on them? I've tried multiple set-ups to allow room for moving around comfortably as well as keeping poop off, but I can only do one of those at a time. It may be the size of her cage(I've been looking for a new good one) or because I have too many, but 5 sounds about right. I see videos of people's cage setups and their perches are perfectly clean while mine have stains all over them even after cleaning! How do you guys do it?

It depends on how big your cage is really. I change everything weekly so I have anywhere from 4 to 8 perches in, plus her huge apple branch. I use a baby wipe daily to clean them off and I soak them in water...then add a little vinegar after they have soaked for awhile. Then I soak them again in water and let them dry. It's something my mom swears by.

But that's only if they have poop on them. Most the time Emmi poops in one corner on a bottom perch. I'm lucky I guess. Lol

I have two tiel's and 11 perches but some them are really really small. I have flat perches, platforms, round perches, java perches, etcetc

I just clean them everyday. Wipe off the poops I see as soon as i can or just wash them off each evening.

I didn't count the rope perches...I have a few of those.

Also I wanted to add, Emmi is a cage climber and hardly ever uses her perches. The apple branch is for chewing and perches are to sit by toys that need more concentration. Like a foraging toy. I have rings on other perches to hang off and drag down a perch on her way to somewhere else. Lol Perches are just toys to her, or obstacles to pass to get where she wants to go.

So watch how Daisy uses her perches. Is she a cage climber? Or does she go from perch to perch to perch to get somewhere?

As long as she has a clear path to get to where she wants, she goes from perch to perch. Otherwise, she just climbs from place to place. And now that I think about it, it's almost certainly because of her cage size. I should hurry it up and find a better one!

Oh and keeping my white wood perches white...let them sit in the sun. They won't be perfectly white forever, but they are cheap to replace.

Mine have 4 perches in on rotation. For me, if I can't fit four perches in without them crossing over or being really close to one another then the cage is too small for my birds (I'm not saying your cage is too small, I'm saying that is what I've decided as a minimum for my birds). They still get poop on but less often and its easy to spot clean the lower perches as and when needed.

Yeah, Daisy's cage can stand to be a bit bigger. I'm still looking out for used ones in good condition so hopefully something will turn up soon.

Marvin's cage is a 30" square, 35" high, and he has six wooden perches of various sizes, including one apple branch and one dowel perch across the width of the cage. He also has a corner shelf, a small lava perch, and a big sisal coil perch that runs from ceiling to floor. I rotate the perches around the cage depending on his current toys and based on what I have observed as his perching and climbing behavior of the moment. Marvin likes having his "furniture" rearranged regularly but my cockatiel did not.
