outside play aveiry??

Postby feathermum » Tue May 28, 2013 9:35 am

i know there's a post for indoor flight, but my husband and i have been looking into a outside play area, our family loves to be outdoors, and i like to garden. So it would make sence to have a outside aviary. so couple questions about it as this will be my 1st spring/summer as a parrot mum : )

1, Has anyone built their own? not a inside cage, but outside only aviary?

2, if u have can u list what materials you'v used?

3, what types of plants/ trees do u use for them to play on outside?

i'v seen the ones for sale, but they'r not big enough for what i really want. i want it to almost be an extention to our house. my husband is a builder & also welds...so i feel like this could be a posiability...any info is great! ty :danicing:

I really want to do this as well. I just know that any aviary has to have the perimeter go into the ground r have the floor up off the ground so nothing can get in. Also has to be double caged so nothing can grab the bird through the bars. I would love to know live trees that are parrot friendly. My idea is a cement floor with the above features and use a potted tree. Then I can just hose off the floor easily and won't worry about insects either. Have not decided whether to have one custom built or buy one.

You need to use steel mesh, it's the only one that can take parrot bites and be absolutely safe under the elements. The posts can be wood but you would need to cover them with a steel sheet so neither the parrot nor other animals can chew them. Concrete flooring is a good solution for cleaning but, personally, I would use organic soil and just sprinkle bird seed on it so the bird would have fresh sprouts (and if you can find a spot that already has a safe tree in it, you would have the best environment ever!). It needs to be double netting, but the outside one has to be mosquito gauge (you can find it in steel also) because you don't want any insect carrying disease coming in contact with your bird but, even with this, you would have to give him a parasiticide every now and then because there are microscopic thingies (spores, eggs, etc) that can still get in and sicken the bird.

An outdoor aviary for my birds is a dream of mine...

Crab apple is good and safe. The only problem with having a tree in there is that it's going to get chewed up (my birds, especially the amazons, tiels and budgies love to chew on branches-every morning I sweep away lots and lots of leaves/needles and small pieces of the branches they chewed off throughout the previous day)
