Daisy finally got a new cage!

I'm sort of wishing I got the white version but the cage is still good :D Daisy's having a bit of a hard time adjusting to the bigger bar spacing, thicker wire, and how it's mostly vertical instead of horizontal. I had the chance of getting a much bigger one for $110, and another one that was even bigger than that for $75(it was used, but clean and huge!) but was worried about space and such. I regret it a little, but oh well.
Surprisingly, the width of the newer one is actually about a half-inch less than her older one...

Ay, I don't mean to make you feel bad but the bar gauge is way too big -she could get her head stuck between the bars and break her neck struggling to get it out. Bars are separated according to the bird's size and there is a reason for each gauge relative to the bird's size. That looks like a transport cage for larger bird.

yeah i agree because sometimes they will to escape through these bars and get stuck ive seen this happen. just keep an eye out all the time.a good idea is to use chicken wire to make smaller squares out of the larger gaps.and be careful of those small lifting doors our weiro can even open those

Hm, I'll make sure to watch out for that. So far she hasn't tried squeezing through, but she can get just up to her eyes out. And luckily, the sliding doors have a latch to prevent her from opening them from the inside.

There's hardly any horizontal bars either - poor thing, how's she supposed to get about?

The cage is nice and its really good that you wanted to improve her accommodation but I have to agree with the others. Whilst no cage I've ever come across has been perfect, this one has a lot of flaws for the type of bird your housing. I would clean it down, send it back and get a refund putting the money towards an even better cage. You will be able to do that as its not fit for purpose unless stated its a travel cage for larger species.

Wot she said! Being marie83 she said it better and nicer and it's all true. Sorry to rain on your parade :( , I know you love Daisy but if you're going to invest in a new home for her, it would be much better to get one that does the job. You want an environment that she's going to be safe in - which she's not with that bar spacing - and that she'll be really happy in - which she won't be if she can't climb around, particularly as she's clipped, isn't she (am I right in saying that)?

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll think about returning it and getting a better one, but what should I look for in a new cage? I definitely want one that's wider and has more depth, but height doesn't matter too much as long as it's not too low. I'll make sure to watch out for vertical bars next time.

Height does matter because vertical flight is the best exercise a bird can get.

I have to agree here, it does matter but I will also add that it is the very tall cages with little in the way of width and length that are a problem. It doesn't matter so much if a cage is tall provided it also has a good width and length for the bird your housing. I've read that a bar spacing of ½ inches to 5/8 inches is ideal for a lovebird but can someone confirm or tell me otherwise?
