Is the bar spacing on this SS cage ok?

Postby paper_lantern » Sat Jul 06, 2013 10:57 am

I had posted awhile back about Chubby chewing the powder coating on his cage. I solved the problem by putting a wood platform in that one corner, now he chews the wood, which is fine. However, I decided I might as well get a really good quality stainless steel cage. I currently have almost $2,000 saved up so far. I'm looking at this cage. Does this look ok? Chubby is a GCC, is the bar spacing alright? Does this website look ok to order from?

I realize the cage is big, but I wanted something with a play gym on top, and I don't think a cage can ever be "too big" if the bar spacing is ok. :)

I have no info about the bar spacing but, AVOID birdcages4less.

I was sure I remembered seeing that somewhere so I did a search on the forums:

There's a whole thread about avoiding them ^^.

Ugh, crud :(. Good thing you told me before I purchased. I was looking at King's Cages but none of them have play tops. Are there any good websites that sell SS cages?

I think http://www.northenparrots.com is a great UK parrot shop. I do all my parrot shopping save pellets there.

I found this by some quick searching:
http://www.northernparrots.com/kings-ca ... od940550a/

Aluminium is a great material as well, and safe. I have a Kings' cages travel cage which I am very happy with (ordered from northern parrots)!
The cage I linked has a playtop, and is quite big (as big as the one you linked). Its expensive, but not as expensive as the one you linked initially ^^, so thats a bonus as well.

Bar spacing is 3/4", which I dont know if its appropriate, but others on here do :).
Quick googling said 3/4" is maximum for a GCC so should be alright, but I'd wait and get some feed back from others here.

Unfortunately I live in the Northern USA, I'm not sure if this website would ship to the US, and if so it would probably be astronomical shipping charges.

I was initially considering an aluminum cage, but I read some stuff online that made me change my mind. Is it really safe if the bird chews the bars?

I must say I'm not keen on the idea of aluminium due to the stories I've about its affects on humans. That's all they are though stories, I've not really researched it as yet but will at some stage. Ollies travel cage is aluminium and at the moment I am quite happy to keep using it but I wouldn't want him living in an aluminium cage full time until I have done more research.

First of all, the answer to your question: yes, 5/8 spacing is perfect for a GCC.

As to aluminum, the one they use for birds cages is anodized which eliminates the potential oxidation process that creates the toxicity BUT it depends on how deep into the surface the process reaches and the sealing process which nobody can determine when buying a cage so, personally, a travel cage or carrier (I have one myself) is fine but I also would not use it as permanent housing for a parrot, especially one that is known to chew the bars.

If money is a problem, you could try going to a carboot sale and looking for a cage there, I found a 5 foot tall cage for $15 at a carboot sale, I spent ages cleaning it just incase, but my Senegal's used it for over a year and I haven't had any problems with it.

Senegals are about the same size as green cheeks and you wouldn't want any bar spacing bigger than 3/4 of an inch- Preferably 1/2 of an inch.

Most carboot sale people won't want to take the cage home with them so you can usually negotiate a price with them.

Just make sure your car's big enough to get it back home.

I'm sorry if I'm completely ignoring your point  I just kind of got stuck at this (-half of a) sentence. Aren't Sennies quite a bit bigger than GCCs?

 So I'd say senegals can do with slightly bigger bar spacing than green cheeks, though I'm not sure. I don't know much about bar spacing. Just felt like chiming in on the senegal/GC-size matter even though it's not important ;)

I know the size's and weight's different: Senegals around 120g to 150g and green cheeks about 70g to 90g, I just figured that the head size would be about the same (which is the part you really wouldn't want to get stuck in the bars :)).

Still, I've never actually had a Senegal and Green cheek in the same room to be able to compare them so if anyone knows better than me I'd rather hear it than be stuck not knowing any better, thanks.

Great senegals by the way mrbowlerhat, I've also got two :senegal:'s (they were bought as a secondhand set) are your Sennies also a boy and girl?
