Cage Requirements(For Conure)

Postby MichaelFTPO3217 » Thu Jul 18, 2013 5:02 pm

Hello everyone. I just recently joined to this forum because I am sure I am getting a parrot! However I have a few questions regarding the cage requirements for a Conure. I have already done my research all about Conures and I have learned the responsibility of caring for a Conure. My concern is with the cage I am considering using to contain my Conure. I've done the measurements and I have concluded everything is fine but the bar spacing. When reading the bar spacing requirements online, it says 5/8 to 3/4 however my cages bar spacing is 6/15; slightly smaller then 5/8. Is that too small for a Conure? I do not know which type of Conure I will get; Sun Conure or Red Masked Conure. If anyone has more experience with Conures or a relatively same sized parrot and the cage requirements on bar spacing I would gladly accept any help. Thanks!

Gotta be honest, I'm not too sure what 6/15 is in milimeters, generally the bar spacing rule is used to prevent parrots from being able to squeeze their head between their cage bars, so they can't strangle themselves while your away. If the conure has enough room to put it claws and point of it's beak around the bars to use it's cage like a climbing frame but can't put it's head through the bars, then the bar spacing is big enough. As long as the bird can't chew through the bars, it's better that the bar spacing is a bit too small rather than a bit too big.

Urgh I hate bar spacings, I can never quite picture it. Smaller is fine as long as there is sufficient room to avoid trapping feet, however the smaller the spacing the weaker the metal bars tend to be, suns are very strong for their size so make sure the bars are thick and sturdy, thin bars like you see on small "budgie" cages will get ruined very quickly.

hello, I do have experience w/ conures as I have 4 : ) so nice to hear that u have done a lotta of research on them and still want one! lol most ppl can't stand their loudness, so I do hope u are ready for that! however I have found that certain things help greatly w/ conures & their behavior. and a cage is certainly one of them. the bigger the better! they are extremely playful & needthe space & toys. for a min. size I would 24in-24in-36. that is MINUMUM . as for the spacing, I can honestly say I have never herd of the bar spacing u have :? hmmm 5/8 is good. so I guess a little smaller isn't such a big deal?? idk...just sounds odd. maybe u could post a pic of the cage? w/ the rest of the dimensions? don't want any toes or beaks caught, tongs either! not big enough to get heads, leg stuck too. so spacing is really important.
