cage swap tips

Postby dan4 » Sat Jul 27, 2013 5:22 pm

My urn stuey has a cage to suit a very large bird ans I've just purchased a large cockatoo. Now the cage stuey is in is perfect for the cockatoo and I'd prefer to buy a new cage for stuey that is more suitable for him. However there will be problems I think......

Stuey will obviously try to return to his old cage, tips to break this?

Could the two birds live comfortably together do you think? The cockatoo is very soppy and friendly

What i would try is make you bird want to switch cages, try to put all of his toys in the new cage and lots of treats in there.

leave him a few days between the two, and when he starts to sleep in the new cage make it official. as long as he's getting enough out of cage time and attention he shouldn't try to go back inside the other cage especially if its occupied.

if stuey tries to go back maybe on top and your cockatoo gets along with him just fine then its just a matter of your birds enforcing their territory.

the only way to find out is to try but you'll need time, but since you've already got the cockatoo maybe an extra 100 could get you a good deal on a cage just as big.

ideally i would buy a new big cage and NOT try to switch, but if you have to maybe try putting them in separate rooms if you can

good luck and keep us posted

It's been announced by both birds that they don't get along, hissing at eachother when in range. I assume this will never change?

I didn't swap cages in the end, I bought a new cage for the cockatoo

Tried introduction again tonight, Stuey the irn is really not happy about her, she wants to investigate him in a friendly way until he hisses at her. Trouble is it's his territory so he probably feels threatened but because I can't carry him about I can't really get them on neutral ground so to speak
