Parrotlet Cage- advice

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Fri Aug 02, 2013 7:24 am

So due to our unexpected new arrival I am now looking for a new cage for a parrotlet. (Please see my post in General for further details)

Little Mi cage at the moment is big enough for the immediate future, its a Liberta Riviera Monaco Extra large but with the 1/2" bar spacing instead of the larger spaced size.

This was my two cockatiels holiday cage (which is only used for 1-2 weeks at a time). I throughly cleaned this and put all new perches in and new bowls and feeding platforms. But I'm going to need to get her something nicer as a permenant cage, what cages do you recommend?

The one she came in was TINY! Like a canary cage!

I know they need room to swing and climb or preferably fly a little. I'm in the UK so my choice of cages is somewhat limited.

I'm not sure which image is the cage you have as several images come up but either way I would think a budgie flight cage would be more than suitable for a parrotlet and would have suitable bar spacing. From what I remember parrotlets are only slightly bigger than a budgie or am I thinking of something else?

Ive never ordered from this site and don't know their reputation but I should think any of the cages prices from the one at £87.99 near the bottom of the page would be suitable through to the last one priced at £139.99

This cage LOL.

The above link is what she is currently residing in which isn't ideal but OK for a few weeks. Parrotlets are slightly chunkier but yes about budgie sized. She's not fully grown yet though.

Ah fair enough, the first link you posted came up with a lot of different cages for me :S I didn't like to assume it was what you meant to post lol.

I think current cage is more than good enough for a few weeks so you can take your time in choosing the right cage. When I say a flight cage would be best its because that's what I would choose. I like to give my birds as much space as possible as I know you do, however I don't know if there are any space/price limitations for you.

I'd spend up to £200.

Space wise Height is no problem, width about 75cm and depth around 50cm. I'm just not sure what shape is right for a parrotlet, do they prefer tall cages, wide cages, fat cages.... I know cockatiels is more about getting a good with that huuuuge height... i/e tall thin cages don't work.

The downside of rescuing, especially those unexpected ones you don't always have time to do all the research in advance

I'm with marie83 - the current cage is more than adequate for the time being. Maybe just take some time to settle in and do your research before investing in another cage?

How about this? It's a budgie cage (great bar spacing for budgies and parrotlets according to google), but very large and sturdy (slightly wider than what you wrote), at 160 quids.

That cage looks just fine for a plet to me, Rebecca. They are almost the same size as a lovie (a bit smaller) and those are conures shown in the picture and they have plenty of room to move around so a plet would be fine there.
