How to keep your bird warm?

Postby KimberlyAnn » Thu Oct 31, 2013 1:26 am

Hi guys! :)

It's been awhile, I've been so busy and we've been taking the summer off of the internet for a nice change of pace. Emmi is doing so well! Very happy bird! No flight feathers coming in yet, but she's doing well flying across the room anyway. She just started molting again so I'm hoping we see those feathers come in soon. She just learned to like music too...but only when we sing or my husband plays his guitar. She will fly to the other room when he plays and stand in front of him flicking her wings and bobbing her head.

It's getting a little chilly here now. Granted, I live in California and it does not snow here. We do get nights where it is in the 20's. We keep our home at 68-70 in the winter so not too bad and no drafts. Right now it gets about 45 outside.

I've been putting a warm towel under one side of Emmi's cage and she's actually switched sleeping spots to the warm side. She loves warm towels in general. So I thought that maybe she might like some kind of warming thing that would last longer. I know, I know, I know...she does not NEED it. But you can't spoil a bird too much, can you?

I do not want anything that plugs in. I don't want the worry of it getting too hot because of a short. I just want something that is bird safe that I can heat up in the microwave or oven.

I've thought about making a cotton hot pad with rice and cotton fabric. It stays warm for a few hours. But maybe there is something I can buy that will stay warmer longer? I'm just worried about fumes.

I read the internet and the internet has stupid ideas. There is one person who uses charcoal in a pan under their cage. Another uses a human hot pad...dangerous! Another uses a reptile bulb...Too hot! Space heaters just freak me out too, but I heard many people use them. I would rather get something that can warm only one side so she has options.

So What's a good option for me to keep Emmi spoiled? I'm counting on you guys! :)

We don't have a parrot room, we live communally in the apartment. Lol I just dragged my rice ice/hot pack from the freezer and heated it up a little. She is laying on her side next to her snuggie thing on the warm side. Her favorite sleeping position. Feet all in balls like a dead bird. That's when I know she's really comfortable. Green Cheek Conures are so weird! I've even caught her sleeping on her back in her cage a few times when we first got her. Scared me! Lol

Our place is 70 right now so I think she just enjoys the extra warmth. This explains her obsession with warm laundry. Even when the temp is over 100 outside.

The room which the parrot resides in is the parrot room :), whether you want it or not ;).
Our parrot room was supposed to be an office as well ^^...

That's true! The livingroom and everything in it is her's. Except for the big green planter. She won't touch it and agrees it's mine. :)

My green cheek has something called a "cozy hut" you can find in almost all pet stores. He sleeps inside it at night, and when it's cold. He LOVESSS it sooo much and you should get your green cheek one!

Honestly, if it is getting into the 20's, a space heater is essential. I have one and my birdy seems very happy and perky when he has been huddled in his cozy hut during cold weather! You could try one out because I used to think they sucked. I use mine everyday at night and in the morning.

Good luck! :gcc: :gcc: :gcc:

I snuggle mine to keep me warm! His down is almost an inch thick in some spots. I have my house set to 60 and I'm certain he's more comfortable than i am.

Our temp has gone down a bit as well, its 69F or 20,5C here atm (not very cold but we usually have it at 73-74F, or roughly 23C. I defitely notice an increase of down during winter, there's down everywhere :P!

When we first got our :sun: we got him a 'Happy Hut' or so it was called. It's exactly what heyihaveaparrot explained. He sleeps and naps in it however in winter we found he would just hang out in there from time to time. He is absolutely in love with it but I would recommend if it gets really cold and you have a parrot similar size to a conure you get a medium sized hut because when Apollo is in there he has so much extra space.

It never really gets cold enough here for that to matter for him and to be honest I can't really be of much help because most the time here in Australia I'm giving him ice cube baths to make sure he isn't too hot :P

Hi all :)

Emmi has a Happy Hut that she sleeps next to. Never in, always next to. She likes towels better. So sad! I had such great hopes of finding cuteness inside that hut! I did give up the idea of finding some kind of warmth for Emmi. It's just not cold enough. Christmas day turned out to be 70℉ so I think we will be ok. Haha
