Metal seed catchers on cages

Postby greenfeathers » Sat Nov 02, 2013 4:25 pm

Hello everyone,

I am currently in the market for a new bird cage, and am comparing my final options. One has a seed catcher on it, and the other does not (but that cage is bigger). I would like to hear from people who have a built-in, metal, funnel-shaped seed catcher towards the bottoms of their bird cages. How well would you say these work? Do you love them or hate them? Do they significantly cut down on cleaning time or do they bring their own problems?

Your thoughts will help me make my decision. I'm excited to get a nice new cage!

It's better than nothing, but the birds still manage to make a mess regardless. Look at it this way... you're going to be cleaning something either way. Either off the seed catcher or off the floor/nearby walls. Actually probably both. The best solution is to put the cage on a mat or something that is easy to clean or replace. Avoid giving them excessively messy foods in the cage as well. Never give a parrot a pomegranate in the cage! It will look like a murder scene.

I dont use the seed catchers on our cage, they take up too much space and the benefit in cleaning isnt worth it imo. Just vacuum the floor a little bit more and you're good :).

Personally I cannot stand seed catchers, they seem such a pointless waste of space. That said I've never actually bought a cage with them on so have no direct experience of them, they just look like the sort of thing that's designed to get in my way and slow me down aha....

Thanks for the opinions, everybody. My macaw is VERY messy and so I am sure I'll be spending lots of time cleaning and vacuuming, whether there is a seed catcher or not. I think I'll just spring for the bigger cage and try to keep him as happy as I can.

Picasso says thanks! :macaw:
