Happy Huts:

Postby schartza23 » Sun Nov 10, 2013 6:15 pm

I was going to try to make my own happy huts for my 3 birds but while trying to find ideas online I came across some horrible stories about them. Should I take away the huts from my birds and not make one? :senegal: :sun: :sun:

I want to add that Squeaky and Snickers love them. So I'll feel horrible if I take them away.

My green cheek has one even though I am ridiculously cautious when it comes to cage accessories having lost one bird to a toy.

Danger can be found in just about anything a parrot may come across, it is just a matter of weighing up the pros and cons and making a decision based on that.

Personally I wont have rope toys in my birds cages as I see more danger with those than with the happy huts though they are free to play with rope toys on their playstand whilst I'm nearby supervising. I keep the hut because Ollie loves it but he only uses it to sleep in and it is made in such a way there are no loose threads or anything he can get caught up on. He also doesn't chew it at all, if I ever caught him chewing it I would remove it straight away. I also give it a quick daily safety check when I spot clean the cages and change the paper lining the bottom, then I give it a more thorough inspection on a weekly basis.

I don't think I would ever attempt to make one though.

Only my GCCs have them, they only use them for sleeping so I think they are fairly safe.

All three of our birds have one, and only Steve and Peanut use them. Diva just ignores it. Peanut and Steve only use theirs for sleeping, I have yet to see them chewing on it. But that doesn't mean I keep a close eye on them. Peanut loves hers though, she likes to sit on top of it and talk.

I purchased a nesting box and my Parrot
Loves it. He did chew the opening to make a larger
Opening. I find him in their talking with himself, and
Simply resting.

If they have had them and love them, then just keep using them.

If we worried about every danger, we would never get out of bed in the morning.
