Intergrating A New Parrot

Postby hnhobu » Tue Nov 12, 2013 12:55 pm

Hello,

It's been awhile since I've been around. I've started volunteering at an exotic animal hospital and have learned a lot more about parrots in the process. Because of that, I haven't really needed you guys for advice or anything of that sort but alas, I am back... and this time I have a new baby! :greycockatiel:

After work my husband is going to be picking up our newest flock member Octave (we are renaming him Gustav). He is a 5 year old Cockatiel who is not only super affectionate, but probably one of the most hilarious birds I've ever met. He's a little afraid of hands, but he's still very affectionate in his own way.

I'm unsure about how Cassette, my 1 year old lovebird will react to having a brother. For the most part, Cassette has almost free reign of the apartment. He's flighted (although not fully, we trim him back just a little bit) and spends over 50% of his time outside of his cage. I'm aware that while Gustav is integrating into his new home Cassette will have to get used to spending more time in his cage - but I would desperately like to get to the point where I can both have them out at the same time (under supervision, of course). We have put Cassette and Gustav side by side in the cages and they seemed to have a positive reaction, but I'm wondering if things will change when we actually get him home.

Does anyone have any advice or tips on how to make Gustav's integration successful while still allowing both birds their own freedoms? I really hate the thought of having two birds cooped up in the cages for the better of the day.

Not an expert, but what I would have done is to just put their cages near each other. Everyday just move the cages a bit closer and don't let any bird see the other one having out of cage time. Just get them so close that the cages are practically touching each other. If you seem them interacting positively through the bars then schedule an out of cage time. If they have a lot of fights, don't separate but rather just stop the fight and keep them near each other. If you dont get any better suggestions, I think this is the best. Also give them both out of cage time but not near eachother or they will get jealous of eachother
