Parrots and Christmas Trees: How do you keep your bird safe?

Postby Dbeguy » Tue Dec 17, 2013 12:19 pm

Happy holidays to all, Tis the season to deck the halls and trim the tree! An obvious problem seems to present itself to any parront. With all that tinsel, all the electric lights and cords, Just how do you decorate for Christmas and keep a curious bird safe? are there any steps short of excluding the parrot(s) entirely from the room with the tree?

I don't decorate. But I have brought my parrots by places with trees lots of times and it's no big deal. I'd say they're sooner scared of the stuff than thrilled about it. But if I had decorations at home it would be like anything else. Supervised out of cage time only. Keep them busy with other things.

We keep all decorations in the kitchen (we have a huge kitchen), where the birds arent allowed anyway.

Sounds like an uphill battle, Michael. No wonder why you're disinclined to put up a tree! Would it be feasible (if they usually have the run of the general living space) to get them used to a birdroom where one may shut the door?

Oh, no. I don't put up decorations cause I'm too lazy. I'm sure I could manage the birds just fine with that sorta stuff around.

Lolz, same here. We don't have a tree, either for the same reasons ^^

With two cats and a dog in the house, Corsair :meyers: only gets supervised time out of cage, anyway. She is at liberty to go where she pleases when out, but if she leaves human sight I go after her. The Christmas tree only means she has some thing new to land on. But I think we'll cut out tinsel icicles this year.

I too am like Michael, no tree or decorations, We are well past it.

But if we did, the bird/birds would not be excluded, you just have to be vigilant and keep an eye on things.
why not give them there own tree, with there new toys wrapped, as well as some old toys and foraging opportunities, maybe small bits of fruit hanging from the branches :D

About Graeme's proposal it makes a lot of sense, but only if you go all out. It would probably be easier either to keep them distracted by more conventional means. Or make sure that your Christmas tree is 100% bird-safe & let them go nuts! having both seems ... more work for no reason.

My only reservations are the lights. do we know of any battery operated lights that wouldn't electrocute an inquisitive bird.
