King's Cage Carrier: Too small for Red Bellied?

Postby Weka » Wed Dec 18, 2013 1:49 pm

Hi all --

As you might've read, we will be adopting Skeeter next month, so we are scrambling to get things ready!

We will be needing a carrier for him, and while we think we know what type (link: http://www.kingscages.com/ProductDetail ... ID=ATT1214 ) we are a bit torn on size. It looks like Michael went for the same kind, and got a medium for Truman. We are thinking medium, as well, but I am a rather petite person and am concerned that it might be too heavy. The small might work for a bird smaller than Truman, but I'm not sure if it would be too cramped, as we are perhaps also thinking of doubling its use as a sleeping cage, as well.

So I guess my question is, would a "small" King's Cage carrier be too small for a red-bellied?

Thanks,

Weka

The small kings carrier is perfect for your RB. I have one for my Ruppell's who is about the same size a RB. Though, even the small size is pretty heavy, in my opinion.

The small one is excellent, its size easily fits either of my birds no problem. On the phone atm but I can post pics tomorrow if you want.

Thanks for your help, cml and GlassOnion!

So would it possible for the smaller size to serve as a sleeping cage as well, do you think?

(Off to research....)

I am looking at getting the same cage for Bailey (Sun Conure) and if you don't mind, I have a few questions, rather that start another thread about it.

I want to get one so Bailey can come camping with us, so he will be in it travelling in the car and also while we are away, sometime for a week. It depends on how he goes with his harness training, if all goes well then he will spend most of the time out of it and it will only be an eat and sleep cage.

So would the small be suitable for a sunnie or should I go the medium?

Hi Graeme -- Way to thread-bomb! (joking) :D

I'm guessing the medium would be a better choice for you, as I was torn between the two and a red bellied parrot is about three inches shorter in length than a sun conure. But others might weigh in on this. Here's a cool link about Kili and Truman's camping adventure, if you haven't come across it: http://trainedparrot.com/Camping/

I would love to go camping or at least day-hiking with my soon-to-be-adopted Skeeter one day, but I'm guessing that might be a verrrry long time from now, if at all.

Off to my own sleep cage,

Weka

Hi Weka,
thanks for the info, it's hard to tell what is what when buying online, sometimes it's a bit of a gamble.

I am really hoping Bailey takes to the harness, we have only had him 1 week, but he loves training and is doing exceptionally well. If and when he can accept the harness he will go most places we go, just like our dog does.

I have been following your thread about Skeeta and saw the video clip, he is just hanging out for some cuddle time :) I glad you decided to get him, you never know, he may just take to a harness straight away either way he will be MUCH happier :)

Okay, on further research, I think we're going with the ATS1719 "SM" -- there was some confusion, as some websites selling these cages are calling them "medium". On the King's Cage website, here is the actual breakdown, plus my observations:

ATM2029 Aluminum Travel Carriers 20"W x 28.87"L x 20.25"H <-- On King's Cages called "Carrier", but "Large" on other websites

ATS1719 Aluminum SM Travel Cage 18.37"D x 16.37"W x <--Here called "SM", but "Medium" elsewhere

ATT1214 Aluminum Tiny Travel Cage 12"W x 14"D x 15"H <--Here called "Tiny", but "Small" elsewhere

So lesson learned. Always, always double check.

Best,

Weka

I can warmly recommend this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/King%60s-Travel ... ravel+cage
Thats the small one, and the product pictures doesnt do the small carrier justice, its much bigger in real life than it seems on websites.
It's plenty enough for our guys, and they are quite a bit bigger than a RB. Bigger than that and it would be harder to use it as a good carrier.

Here's our two carriers. It's the perfect size :).

Its very spacious and bigger would not benefit the birds at all since I wouldnt be able to move it about as easy, and would have a harder time fitting it into the car etc.

Also, why do you want/need a sleeping cage?

Oh, one thing to add about the small one, the only negative thing I have to say about it.

You do want to put the perch pretty low, or in some other way secure the bottom, as its can move upwards if you drop it/put it on an uneven surface/turn the carrier upside down.

With the setup we have in that picture though, it cant slide far, even if we were to drop the carrier.
