Grey African Parrot & Cockatiels (2X)

Postby baldana » Thu Jan 23, 2014 3:00 pm

LS,

We have a 8 weeks old Grey African Parrot which we are still hand-feeding. The parrot will go to his cage when he is 12 weeks old and we were thinking to join our 2 mature cockatiels with him in 1 big cage.

Do you recommend/advise to do so...? Can you have 2 cockatiels and 1 parrot in 1 cage...?

Regards,

Bassam

No and no. House the two tiels together and the grey separately. Putting all 3 in one cage is a disaster waiting to happen as the African grey is a lot stronger, one bite is all it will take for you to have a dead or severely injured cockatiel. Whilst there are stories of people housing smaller parrots with much larger ones with no issues the risk is far too big and a situation can change in a moments notice. Also don't let them land on each others cages, many birds have been bitten through the cage bars.

I had to rehome my CAG in 1995. She went to my sister-in-law who had a bunch of cockatiels.

Just as Marie has suggested, a cockatiel climbed on the Grey's cage and ended up losing a foot. The birds got along outside the cages, but the grey would fight off any intrusions into her cage by the cockatiels.

Ditto. I would not even consider it. Only mated birds should share a cage and that only if they are let out for hours every day (I would not want to spend the rest of my life with my husband in a single room).

DO NOT put you cockatiels with your African grey. it would be ok if they were all hand raised together but since they have not then no
