Happy huts and safety

Postby AnarchoBoxer » Thu May 15, 2014 2:43 pm

I did a search but I'm not sure there was a direct discussion about whether or not folks here deem them safe.

Is there a consensus here? I have read a couple of awful stories of birds being injured and even killed because they frayed them or loosened seams and became hung up in them. My rational side is telling me these stories are probably in the slimmest of margins and represent a negligible statistical possibility (like dying in a car crash *because* you wore your seatbelt, etc.) Is this really a big deal if I were to inspect it daily for damage and replace it with something else anytime I am away? Am I just being overprotective? I really think Tuco would love something like this, but I don't want to endanger him.

Thanks in advance!

I see nothing good about them. At worst it kills the bird, at best it makes it hormonal and nesty. No point in encouraging that or taking the chance.

Thanks :)

I'm sure you've answered a million times, but what do your birds sleep on/in?

NU Perch

They just sleep on the highest or most comfortable perch in their cage. When I lived in an apartment I used to cover the cages with a black sheet. Now that they have a dedicated bird room with its own thermostat, I just close the windows at night. They sleep on a perch. Most birds that aren't nesting just sleep on a branch at night.

Appreciate the help! I like the look of that perch, and I think he'd dig it too.

Well, actually, quakers don't ever get nesty from sleeping in a hut because they always sleep in communal nests in the wild while GCCs don't as long as you keep them to a solar schedule - and both species absolutely LOVE their little huts! But what Michael says about getting nesty from them is true of all the other species and there is always the danger of them chewing on them, swallowing threads or pieces of fiber or getting tangled up and getting hurt in the process so they should be thoroughly checked (inside and out) every single day and replace as soon as they start getting frayed AND if one sees the bird actively chewing on it, they should be removed.
