Conure Cages

Postby charliezjalapae » Thu Jun 12, 2014 8:43 am

I am planning on getting either a green cheek or a sun conure sometime soon. I was wondering what would be an adequate cage size and more importantly, I was wondering if anyone had and specific recommendations brand-wise and such?

Thanks in advance!

Conures are very active, please get the biggest cage you can for them. Mine is in a cage designed for African grey/amazon parrots (please ensure the bar spacing on any cage isn't too big though) and he uses every inch of it. Whilst I'm not suggesting that you get one quite that big (do it if you can though) the minimum sizes I see recommended a lot are far too small even if the bird is out most of the day.

I was planning on going as big as possible, since they are so active and it definitely wouldn't hurt regardless. I'm mostly just having trouble finding larger cages that have appropriate bar spacing. I don't want to risk any accidents.

What country are you in? maybe we could help you find one suitable. I struggled to find Ollies because of the bar spacing issue mainly, then I got lucky.

First you need to determine with which species you are going to go because sunnies are much larger than GCCs.

I'm still doing all my research and that's just what I've narrowed it down to so far. I know they both have their advantages and disadvantages and I'm trying to make an educated decision lol. I live in the United States.

If your research is limited to reading and watching videos, I would like to suggest that you visit and maybe volunteer at an avian rescue facility and actually meet some of the birds that you may be researching. It is a more hands on approach but it also has the advantage of providing you with actual experience with taking care of a bird.

Well the suns are bigger for sure but the type of cage I would go for wouldn't differ that much as I tend to go for universal bar spacing that will be re-used in the future for other species. I could quite easily use Ollies cage for a grey or 'zon with no safety issues (although I would prefer to house a grey or 'zon in a macaw sized cage.)

I have looked into finding a rescue to volunteer at so I could get a more "hands on" idea but sadly there aren't any avian rescues in my state:( Strangely, we don't even have a bird store or very many breeders here. I have been visiting some of the exotic pet stores and playing with their birds though, so it's better than nothing I guess. Otherwise, I've been stocking up on books and reading various blogs and such online.

May I inquire as to which state we are speaking of?
