What would be best?

Postby kikidee » Sat Jun 14, 2014 4:03 pm

So I'll be bringing home my new POW Parakeet, Navi, home in 3 weeks when she is finished getting weaned. However, I realized something as I was reading about their first time home.

In two weeks, my summer vacation ends as I start a summer class for 6 weeks. This part would be fine as I plan to study with my bird and show it attention during breaks and free time, since I'll be studying a lot and not out and about.
That being said, this school I'll be attending for the summer is a little over and hour away, and I will be staying with my grandma 3 days out of the week because the school is 10 minutes away from her. I figured this would be fine. I would simply travel to my grandmother's house with Navi and stay there with her, and travel back. But I do remember reading that I'm supposed to let a parrot get used to their environment. Would this be very scary and unhealthy for her?

I guess my two options are, leave her at my house with my parents but not get to spend time with her during those 3 days, or if it is permitted, let her travel with me. Perhaps she could just get used to two homes?
Let me know,
Thanks.

I would take my bird with me, in those circumstances. I would watch her for any sign that she was stressing out, but since this is something that you will be doing on a regular basis, she will probably adjust to it. I think that her being able to be with you will be the deciding factor. I think that by being with you that will prove to be less stressful for her. Maybe you could start it early so as to have you present to reassure her for the first day, then without you on day two for close to the amount of time your classes would take and then with her the rest of the day. If you could do that a couple of time before the real thing kicks in it would probably help her to adjust to it with less stress.

Thanks for the response Wolf. Yeah I figured a lot of time with me would be more important than less time traveling. Thankfully I only have one class and only 3 days a week so I don't think she will be too upset about that, but I am definitely open to helping her adjust to me being away for class especially since it'll be so soon after her arrival.
I just want her to be happy, and will probably be asking a lot more questions this year to make sure I am doing a good job for certain things.
