Cage for 2 Capes

Postby moderndaydinosaurs » Wed Jul 16, 2014 11:24 pm

Does anyone have any good suggestions or sources for a cage that would be suitable for 2 Capes?

I had a cage all picked out and ordered that would have been great for one, but now that both of the girls are coming home with me and I plan to house them together, I'm finding it difficult to figure out their housing situation.

I don't want to go overboard and use a macaw cage, but I don't want to skimp either.

Help?

A macaw cage would not be overboard, in my opinion, as long as the bar spacing is right.

Bar spacing wont be a problem for the bigger species, it's usually 1" on all large cages. I agree with Wolf, a double cage (aka Macaw cage) will be the minimum for two capes. They are roughly 2m wide, 1.8m high and a meter deep. They are awesome, if big.

I keep my two parrots in just such a cage, I wouldnt ever want them to have a smaller cage even if it takes up alot of floor space in the parrot room (also my office when they are kind enough to let me use it ;)).

You can't house two birds that are not mate-bonded to each other together. They won't fight with each other now because they are babies but they might once they hit puberty (especially since they are the same gender). Not all birds like another one enough to share a cage, they need to be mate-bonded for that. You need to wait until they are both adults (2.5 to 3 years old) and see if they like each other (allo-preening, sleeping and eating together, etc). Just because one has two birds of the same species that get along with one another, it doesn't mean that all of them do.

Pajarita is correct here, there are no guarantees that they will get along good enough for one cage, even if the odds are good for the same species and siblings(?). Even if you get two cages rather than one, go for the biggest your wallet can take.

NOTE: You cannot use only the divider if you want to split a big cage such as the ones I linked, as that puts toes at big risk! You will have to put in plexiglass to cover the bars so there isnt any risk of injury from fighting through the bars.

I wouldn't use 1" bar spacing for a Cape. Its not because a Cape can get stuck in 1" but because they have strong beaks that can bend bars. Suddenly it's more than 1". Doesn't leave much margin. Also I wouldn't cage them together. Mine isn't, but I have heard that they can get pretty cage aggressive and territorial. Lastly it would be difficult to impossible to find a cage big enough for two Capes with appropriate bar spacing and not even easy with inmappropriate bar spacing. I would opt to say a Cape easily needs more room than a grey because the are more active and jse the space.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to house them together for the foreseeable future and if they grow apart and need to be separated down the road I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. So far they are very congenial with each other. Hopefully I can find something with 3/4 inch bar spacing, otherwise I'll have to go with one-inch and just monitor for areas of wear and tear.

I am so looking forward to bringing them home!

Ok here is mine idea since you are going to try.... and put them together I would get one that I have it is call a double flighted bird cage by A and E Here is a picture of it you can open it up so that they will have the whole cage by if some was to happen you could at least put the divider in it and make two cages.
