Wasps

Postby Matt Alyk » Mon Oct 12, 2015 8:50 am

A couple times when we had Lilly outside, wasps would try to make nests in her cage. It looked like they would get defensive around her, and she would be defensive to. I don't think a wasp sting would be ideal for a parrot. One building an outdoor aviary, how do you avoid this?

Probably the safest way as far as for a parrot would be to use a garden hose to wash the wasp nest off and just step on the waterlogged wasps. It is best to do this after dark so you can soak the entire hive all at once.

Putting a mosquito screen around it works...

Okay, the masquito screen would probably work best. And if any nests are made, spray it with a hose.

I would use nylon net from a fabric store. It costs little and the bird will rip it instead of getting stuck in it.

We are talking about an outdoor aviary which, by its very nature, it's something like a huge flight cage so the birds don't actually hold on to the sides they way they do in cages. But, in any case, if one wanted to make it as it should be, the mosquito netting should go on the outside and separated by an inch or so from the stainless steel wire cloth that would make the 'walls' of the aviary so it's kind of like a cage within a cage.
