Touch-up paint

Postby galeriagila » Mon Jul 18, 2016 7:50 pm

I've been cage-shopping... the BIRD gets a new one every 5 years or so. Usually due to deterioration of powder-coating caused by wear, chewing, etc.
But I just can't find one I like as much as the present one.
There are a few places of wear which I think could be touched-up.
How do I do that safely? Or CAN it be done safely?
I have surfed the 'net but can't find any source that I trust as much as HERE.
Thoughts, pleeeeeease!?

I am thinking that given your location, you should be able to find someplace that does powder coating, I don't know what they charge but it should be much cheaper than a new cage. This would work if you have a smaller or alternate cage that he can use while his is getting a new paint job.

The next alternative for this would be to use an epoxy or appliance paint to either paint the whole cage with or just to touch it up and then to bake it with a heat lamp. I have done this to maintain my cages as they were all in need of major cleaning and paint. You must use the appliance or the epoxy paint as I don't believe the other paints are hard or durable enough to use with a parrot. I have not had any problems as of yet and I did my cages three years ago and they are still in good shape.

Thanks, Wolf!
Well, I only have the one cage (plus a travel cage) so getting it professionally done, or even doing it myself, is not feasible now that I really think it through. I think I had better just go ahead and bite the bullet and get him a new cage. I wish I had bought a stainless steel cage 32 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Depending on how much out of cage time Rickeybird has a travel cage could work for a short period of time. It would depend on how long the powder coating would take. It might only take a couple of days, but I don't know as I live near a small town and there are no powder coating facilities available where I live.

Go with what you think is best.

Stainless steel cages are the only way to go but terribly expensive  I have a few and they are so easy to clean and virtually indestructible. I run a full time add on Craig's list for stainless cages wanted and have obtained a few that way. You might want to try that before you get another powder coated one. BW.

Thanks, BW... I have been searching on and off for a used stainless steel cage. I would LOVE to have one. I actually had a wonderful dream once, that I found one for a few dollars at a house-sale! I woke up and was like "awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww..."!!!!!
I'll make sure I do a good search yet again... who knows?
I tend to get in a panic when taking on a new project, like getting a new cage. It's not really all that critical to do it immediately. I can calm down a bit. Craig's List, huh? Gonna try that! Mind if I ask how much you had to pay for the ones you found?

RESOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After much catastrophizing and agonizing, I have a happy ending.

Background... really nice big powder-coated cage with chewed areas on bars damaging powder coat.

I was staring at his perch fixtures one day and got an inspiration. I bought a bunch of stainless steel washers, bolts, and wingnut thingies and simply covered the damaged areas. Bird doesn't care. So I can keep the age. And I can keep doing this for quite a while.

Happy, happy, joy, joy!

Great idea!!! And, in truth, parrots prefer their old cages to any new one, anyway :D
