I'm glad that's done...

Postby Natacha » Sat Oct 10, 2009 7:56 pm

So today I went and bought a new play gym on casters for my birds. Not that I needed it now, it's going to be more practical in the new appartment where I intend on having the birds' cages in a separate room but will still stands and gyms in the living area.

My mom had one and loves it, so I decided to purchase mine now.

It was from PetSmart. Having gone to the two nearest my building and not seeing any there (PetSmart bought out Super Pet a couple of years ago (a Canadian chain I liked much better than PetSmart, oh well) and they have taken over the stores, therefor I have two PetSmarts very very close by) two weeks ago I decided today to go to other stores in the city, looking for the stand. Found one and bought it. The plan was to keep it in storage once we made sure all the pieces were "fine" (aka no dents) until we got the new place (much easier to keep stored in the box than having another gym occupy more room, right?). Well...I later went to to read some reviews (I know, who reads reviews after buying something, right?) and this one lady loved it...except it took her several attempts to get the right one. Pieces wouldn't fit together and she kept having to return it. Well, having seen that I figured we might as well try to assemble ours to see if it "fits" everywhere. I almost thought I had to return it. In the end, everything did fit, not without a bit of frustration. The thing is assembled, looks neat, but I am NOT taking it apart. It will take up a bit of space for the next two months and I DON'T CARE. It's not worth taking apart.

I will (maybe) take a picture of it assembled tomorrow, but in the mean time, you can see it here.

I hope they do too.

To make things worst, it took us forever to find the instructions. There were not withing the inside box (a box in a box) where the rest of the stuff was....it had was in the big box, tucked in the bottom.

I had started assembling it blindly (and was doing a pretty good job at it, just following intuition).

But it does look fun once assembled.

I made my own bird play stand.

5 gallon bucket, 5lb of quickcrete and a bird safe tree branch. (I used maple) Just be sure no pestacides have been used on the branch and it's a good idea to rinse the branch off before you set it.

I've thought of a natural branch for a playstand, however I'm not sure of any pesticide-free trees in the area so until I find something I'm 100% is safe, I'll have to wait :)

Aww, I have a spiral swing just like that but I hung it from an aluminum stand that I build for it. Nice idea with the tree though. For a few weeks Kili liked the spiral but once she discovered that she could just climb to the top of it, that's all she'd ever do instead of spending time on it. Now that she can fly she spends all her time in one of two places (cage top, and me!).

Thanks! The nice thing about that stand is it only cost $12!!
minus the toys of course!
Now I have to make a bigger one for Marvin! :)
Noodle has another swirly swing that I mounted above his cage, he perches in the middle and preens or climbs to the top and preens.

That really is awesome!

I paid like $100 for Kili's climbing tree. The thing is I really don't know diddly about trees so I'd be really worried about getting the wrong kind of branch, pesticides, acid rain, etc. But if I could get a health guaranteed tree like that it would be awesome.

I set it over a plastic mat for those rolling office chairs. Then just wipe up poops. It's kind of a pain but for $12 who's going to complain?
