getting ripped off

Postby TheNzJessie » Sun Jun 20, 2010 3:09 am

hi guys, have any of you been completely ripped off while buying a cage? led to believe its for $500 or what ever but really its worthless?

my experience today. i received my lorikeet cage brought it online brand new. gets delivered to my house the box is soaking wet and the cage is completely rusted out..... yes you read right a brand new cage that is completely rusty and crumbling away as soon as you touch it...$300...
and guess who is not replying to my emails......

i want to see how common these types of situations are.

how many of YOU have been ripped off?

I will suggest everyone to go to store and buy it instead of buying it from online....

Coz online you cant check the cage's condition.

Ouch NzJesse, that's harsh. What's the name of the company you bought it from? New Zealand laws will probably be the same as the UK so even if you can't contact them directly, you are entitled to "fit-for-purpose" goods and should pursue a refund or replacement cage. For $300 it's definitely worth it and if you need any help I would be happy to. Does New Zealand have a Citizen's Advice Bureau? That's your first stop if you don't hear back from the company.

By contrast, I got 2 of my many cages from ebay. One, my sennies main cage, cost me £12 and it's HUGE. I also got an indoor aviary (Ferplast Mito) worth £300-400 new for £50. I'm not saying that all second-hand cages online won't be rip offs, but the way I see it you are taking less of a risk with an outlay. Of course, the best way to guarantee quality is "store-bought" cages which doesn't sound like an option for you.

If you paid by credit card, you may have some protection and could make a stop payment on the grounds that the goods were not received as advertised.

ok got in contact with them...finally...after many threats, they said if i can supply evidence that the cage was faulty upon arrival not by me they will send a replacement. they asked for pictures of the 'affected areas' and they will make the judgement.... i emailed back saying they can have it back and they emailed me back saying i would have the pay the courier costs...so i have sent pictures of the cage. im expecting there reply in 24 hours..... if they dont i did pay with debit visa so i will try and get my money back through that.

Sounds like you don't have anything to worry about - if it's all rusted up there's no way you could have done that in a few days. You should demand that they pick it up themselves, though - there's NO WAY you should be paying for the courier! What's the name of the company and I'll read their T&Cs?

NZ law is almost identical to UK law. Read this article:

http://www.consumeraffairs.govt.nz/for- ... with-goods

It's a basic overview of your rights. New Zealand also has a CAB...if the company concerned gives you ANY sort of poop, call them:
