Smallest bar spacing for Sennie?

Postby lainmai » Sun Jun 27, 2010 6:03 pm

I am looking to be picking up the same cage which I have my Parrotlets in for my Senegal later this week but was wanting to know what everyone's opinion was on it. It is the A&E flight cage model 13221

Exterior Dimensions: 62.25" H x 21" W x 32" D
Interior Height: 35.25"
Bar Spacing: 1/2"
Bar Size: 3mm

Removable Tray & Grate for easy cleaning
Durable Powder-Coating
Large Opening Door
Wrought Iron Bird Cage

Is the 1/2" bare spacing too small for a Senegal at 3mm?

I can get the flight cage for $150, or I can pick up a cage that is pretty much identical to what Kili has for the same price (18" x 18"). As I am away during the day over the summer to work I'd prefer the larger cage. I just don't want to get something that is not ideal to my new little 'fid!

I don't see an issue with the 1/2" bar spacing ... the general rule for a Senegal (or similar size) is not to get a cage with bar spacing greater than 3/4". I would get the largest cage you can afford. Jessie, my Senegal uses every square inch of his cage ... where as my Red Belly just uses the top half of her cage.

1/2 inch bar spacing is fine for a Sennie. It's the larger bar spacings that become a problem.

I've worked with a sun conure that lost a few toes due to bar spacing that was too small - was also concerned since Sennies are known to be chewers, don't want it chewing the bars out of the cage =)

I could see if the bar spacing was small enough to catch their little toes or feet that it could be problematic but 1/2 inch is fine for a Sennie or similar sized bird. I love the cage... I'm an advocate of bigger cages for birds. My Sennie has a 28 x 20 cage. I think the one you've got will be great for him or her!

I know someone who uses that exact cage for her Meyer's parrot - I wouldn't worry about putting a Senegal in it.

WOW! $150 is quite a good deal for this cage like this. Mind PM me where you are getting it? Thanks.

I got it from Birds R Us in Brampton - he is also the breeder of my little Tobi!
I picked up his last cage but he'll be ordering more soon directly from A&E.
