Lucy and Jessie on the Move

Postby lzver » Thu Jul 29, 2010 7:46 pm

Lucy and Jessie are on the move .... our dining room is now being turned into 'The Bird Room'.

Here's a few pictures. We still have some work to do. We are getting a second hand carpet from friends this weekend, so the whole area will be carpeted. Given time, there will be a net and several toys hanging in the center of the room. Moving the birds here will allow them A LOT more time out of their cages because I can keep an eye on them from the living room.

Err....did I understand right?? Are you going to put carpet in a "birdroom"??

If it's not too indiscreet, may I ask why?

Talking out of experience, cleaning carpet after birds do their "business"..nor nearly as easy as something you can wipe down clean ;)

I can't wait to have a birdroom with no carpet

Oh and the cages...I have a similar one which is half the height or so. I HATE cleaning it! Someone actually offered me one a cage like the ones you have, but in a different colour and I passed. Didn't have space for it, an immediate use for it and the though of cleaning it....how do you find cleaning yours?

Yeah carpet ... I can't bear the thought of them pooping all over the hardwood floors.

We'll see how it goes ... maybe it will be a lesson learned.

The cages aren't bad ... the worst part is cleaning the grate. Its easier in the summer because my husband takes them outside and power washes them. We don't plan on having them for too much longer. Hopefully we'll be able to replace them next year.

Haha! I see the vacuum at your house also lives in the bird room. I don't even put mine away anymore. Why bother?

I used to have mine out as well where the cage was..but after breaking 2 vacuums in less than two years....well we got a shop vac and it terrifies the birds so we have no choice but to put it away.

The only thing I'll EVER try to sell 100% to someone is the Black & Decker dustbuster.

Small, portable, not too loud & you can get a wet/dry vac. Filters are washable, replaceable and usually pretty cheap.

I really don't know how I'd ever live without one!!

I have small carpets under my cages and find it helps trap the seeds and mess in one location - much easier to clean up that way with a daily 2min pass of my dustbuster. I only vacuum weekly otherwise with my full size vacuum cleaner.

I like rugs for bird areas. They catch/hold the dust down until it can be vacuumed. It's a little more work getting poop out but not mission impossible. After a few years when the rug gets too warn, just replace the rug.

The only problem is they develop waves that are hard to impossible to get out.

We'll see how it goes ... Everything to do with the birds tends to be a learning experience.

We're not paying anything for the carpet ... my husband's installing hardwood flooring for good friends of ours and they planned on throwing it out anyways. We were also thinking of getting a durable piece of plastic to keep under the play area which could be wiped down when needed.
