Question about a Senegal and a Conure:)

Postby babydoll101 » Sat Aug 07, 2010 9:25 am

I know alot of you have Senegals. I may be getting one soon. I already have a Crimson Bellied Conure. She has a HUGE wrought iron metal cage. I was wondering if they can be housed together. They would be outside of it through out the day but at bedtime would they be ok in the cage together?
Thanks so much.

I personally wouldn't risk it. But they might be able to be housed together. But it won't be immediately...it might take years. And if they just don't like each other, it won't ever happen.

Cockatiels and other parakeets are very easy about that. You can shove them into the same cage without much of a fuss. Parrots are different. I probably would never put two parrots together in a cage unless they are a male and female of the same species who have connected as a couple.
Seperate species are, well, seperated. They have the same overall bodylanguage to us, but to them they might differ like night and day! A small insignificant behavior with one species might mean a very agressive offence to the other. You never know. Outside he cage that wouldnt be such a problem since a) you are there and b) they can get away from eachother. But in a confined space with you no where near to intervene, I wouldnt.
Kika: Senegal Parrot.
Guus: Cockatiel, Yellowcheek, cinnamon, pearl, pied.

1. I wouldn't house them together reasons others have already list :D

2. Just making sure that your cage is powder coated. I have been told that non coated/treated wrought iron is not a safe material for a cage

I would never put a Senegal Parrot in the same house cage as any other parrot (including another Senegal Parrot). They are very territorial and aggressive. A breeder told me that Senegal Parrots are killers and will kill other birds in their territory. She had a bonded breeding pair of Senegals for 10 years in the same cage and one day one of them killed the other anyway.

Separate cages, always.

Put it this way, I'm sure you are happy to have your own personal space at times, no? A place where you can go and be alone? Well...by forcing two birds together in a cage, you aren't giving them the option to have their own space.

I would not risk it either from personal experience. Pleas elearn from my mistakes. I wrote a more in depth thread in the general topic I believe it was. Basically, our Senegal has killed both of our conures a year apart (the last one being Sunday night). The first one, we stupidly had them out together unsupervised. After that, for the past year, we have given the separate out of cage time but at some point in the past few days when we replaced our other conures food dish we forgot to lock it in place (I am very throrough and have no clue how this could happen...human error). Anyways, our Senegal walked across the floor, climbed our conure's cage, lifted the bar that holds the food dish in place (was not snapped unfortunately...an accident I will forever regret), pulled out the food dish, went into the cage and killed our conure. Just not a risk I would take. If you are happy with your conure, I would stick with it...possibly get another conure (our 2 conures were very well bonded and loved the companionship).

OMGosh! I am so sorry for your loss:( Thank you so much for sharing your story.

I guess it wasn't meant to be because I won't be getting the Senegal after all. She will be going somewhere closer to the owners house where she can see her often. You are right though of 2 conures being better companions. My Skittles was housed together with her sister before I got her. They got along great. I have thought though of getting another Crimson Bellied Conure. A handtamed baby. So we will see.
