Housing for a single cockatiel?

Postby garou97 » Sun Aug 15, 2010 11:42 am

I'm planning on getting a cockatiel soon and I can't decide between a few cages...

What do you think? Should I get one out of the above, or do you know of something that would work better? Thanks!

I would go for the first cage.

The second is too high compared to the width. The bird will spent most its time in the upperhalf of the cage anyway. If you have a cage that is just very high but small, the bird will have less space to manouvre than in a short but wide cage. Do you get my meaning? Birds use the horizontal space more than the vertical. God I am bad at explaining this.

The third doesnt even compare to the first cage sizewise. There is no such thing as a cage to big.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. But should I go with 26" x 13-3/4" x 36" or 31" x 20-1/2" x 40-1/2"?

I refuse to sell my tiels to people with cages that are too small. My minimum is 20 x 16 x 24 inches (length x width x height). You can vary these measurements a bit while keeping the interiour space the same, but not too much.
Keep in mind that 13 inches is almost exactly the wingspan of a cockatiel. If he starts flapping his wings in his cage he will hit the sides. I would go with the bigger one.

Definitely the one from before, this one is too vertical. My Archimedes has a cage kind of like this one and I want one with more width because he likes to play on the bars. ;)

I second that.
Plus, the slides where you put in the feedingbowls are very escape sensitive. Once your bird figures out how they open (and he will!) you will have a real escape artist on your hands.
