Size of cage for a B/G

Postby Jumpman2382 » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:31 am

Most questions! :)

How big of a cage should a B/G Macaw have? I've been looking around for cages and I've found some different ones that I like and believe would be a good size.

I've been looking at A&E cages - are they a good brand???

Sizes have ranged from 40x30 Dome Top, 48x36 Dome Top both being from A&E cages.

Thanks.

Min. requirements for a B&G are:

36"x48"x60"

Recommended bar spacing is:

1" to 1.5"

And remember...bigger is better if you can get it!

The most macaws I see have no tail feathers left beyond the first foot or so, while they sould be over 2 feet.
Why? The cage is just big enough to live in but not big enough to prevent the tail being messed up by rubbing it in the bars.

I honostly have no idea. I never owned a macaw. I just wanted you to take into consideration how large a macaw is and not to forget the tail length. Its such a sad thing to see a beautifull healthy well adjusted macaw with only half a tail.

Kim - I agree with you. The cages I have been looking at are over six feet tall. I think that is tall enough because I haven't seen any cages that are taller. Thanks!

Part of the tail loss maybe attributable to how much and what kind of 'out' time the bird has...the other issue may be due to toy/perch placement in the cage itself - vs. the size of the cage. I'd say all the cages I've seen advertised specifically for macaws are deep enough...but you want to make sure you have enough width and depth.

My son's friend, with a B&G...has his out a lot...tail is beautiful...

The one at the pet store (personal pet, she just lives in the store...been there for 20 years) doesn't have such a nice tail since she mostly perches on top of her large cage, and the tail gets ratty from being dragged on the cage top...

A&E is a good brand. Also good are Avian Adventures and Prevue.

Any "cage" meant for a macaw will suit the bare minimums. Realistically considering their enormous size, an entire room or aviary (indoor or outdoor) is most suitable.

you would probably be better off looking at aviaries you can convert into a indoor cage instead of looking at cages
