So, Scotty's cage is too darned big to drag out in the yard often, and I think I'd fully clean cages more often if I didn't have to go through that hassle, so I decided to look into steam cleaners for cleaning in situ, based on positive experiences reported here.
What I found out is that there are basically two types of consumer market cleaners available -- affordable ones that produce steam at boiling-water temperature and higher-end machines that produce super-heated steam up to 350°F or so. Some of those also have "nanotechnology" built in that supposedly guarantees sterilization, but I have been completely unable to find a description of what they are actually talking about, nor any viable references. Had the superheated steam models come in at less than $1000-$2000 I might have gone for it -- these can actually sterilize effectively by heating the cage surfaces. What I ordered is a Hahn that does 212°F steam and I'll continue to supplement with a cage wizard wipedown. I am hoping it does allow me to fully clean without dragging out the hose and soap. We shall see. Thanks to Amazon prime, it should turn up on my doorstep tomorrow.
