Deciding on the Perfect Cage

Postby zazanomore » Sun Sep 26, 2010 4:50 pm

Sometime in the next couple of months, I am going to be purchasing a bigger cage for Einstein (cockatiel).

Looking through ebay, petsmart, pet value, kijiji, craigslist and usedottawa, I have found these three cages.

The first two cages I found are almost exactly the same. However, the petsmart one is more expensive.

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... n=Pet+Type

I hear that A&E makes very excellent cages, but the reviews on this product make me believe it isn't as good as I'd like it to be.
I really like this type of cage for my cockatiel, it seems to neat and tidy.

The second cage is : http://cgi.ebay.ca/Bird-cage-Finch-budg ... 19bf1735da

It is cheaper, plus I don't need to pay extra to get it in black.
Something on both of these choices that I don't like is the fact that they have plastic cups and guillotine doors.

The final cage is : http://cgi.ebay.ca/Bird-cage-parrot-coc ... 1e5e07249d

It is more spacious and seems to have everything I'm looking for (but it's not exactly like the first two)
It does have a play top and is bigger.

I just want to make the right choice. He doesn't spend all day in his cage, but when he is in it, I want it to be perfect for him. He doesn't seem to play a lot, so getting him into a bigger cage with more toys might inspire him to look at his creative side.

Has anyone else bought from Elite Pets? Do you think this is a good quality cage? The pricing seems a little low, because typically the cages that size I see are around 400$. I want something that will last.

I would go with the last one but I like to have food doors that accessible from the outside and the playtop is nice to have as well. The advantage of the other two is that they have more space side to side which is more important than top to bottom space for parrots. But, the third one should be plenty of room for one tiel.

I'm 99.5% sure I'll be buying myself an "Elite Pets" cage for Christmas :P

I just looked up this http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=53016
So I'm pretty sure the cage will be good quality.

Actually that last one seems to be the smallest, make sure you are looking at the CAGE dimensions not the overall dimensions. I just looked quickly. It is actually very similar to the one we have for Scooter. In retrospect I'd have gone a size up for him, but... ours was made by Avian Adventures and seems to be quite good quality.

OK, here is a dumb question that just occurred to me... is black a good color for a cage? Would it tend to "disappear" at night from the bird's perspective? Or am I out of my fuzzy little mind?

Well, my room, where the birds stay, is never completely dark (to prevent night frights) so I don't think that would be a problem. The cage also comes in different colors.

But that's a good question.

I wouldn't think that a black cage would be a problem. I've had very dark charcoal gray cages and no trouble with them.

I almost bought the same cage (3) from Elite. I think they are decent cages, however look on Kijiji Toronto for Elite because I saw the same cage A11 for 20% off from them on a different site. As a matter of fact I would call them and speak to someone in person and try to get a bit of a deal!!

One thing to keep in mind is the wider the cage the better not necessarily taller, so maybe the first two choices would be better. As for colour, in my opinion you can see your birds better in a white cage

Good luck, it is silly bue we do get excited buying new things for our birds!!

If he spends most of his time in his cage and doesnt need a play top, I'd recommend this cage:

http://www.bird-supplies.net/protege.htm

It's sturdy, powder coated, a dometop, and 24"x22" base which is more than enough room for a cockatiel. I've got my senegal in it.

I got mine on sale for 150.00, though.
